Grover Locking Tuners (HEY SHINER!)
« on: November 29, 2007, 07:23:33 PM »
Having been intrigued by locking tuners for a long time... I did some research and decided to swop out the standard Grovers on my D13S for lockers.  I liked the Grovers because they looked similar to standard tuners (no unsightly additional knurled screws etc.) and the locking devices are internal.

So... here's the results of this evenings play:

THE ORIGINALS

THE LOCKERS

THE ORIGINALS
I think I'm OK at string changing but 1E and 2B are always a bit of a pain.

THE LOCKERS
Pull the string through and hold it, tighten the tuner 'til the internal cam locks it in place, tune (BTW that's all ONE turning the peg action... you don't need to THINK about anything).  All y'all will notice that it's in tune in about half a revolution (hey man, to me this IS a REVOLUTION) I love it! [8D][8D][8D]

I just thought this might be of interest to other lazy gits people with better things to do with their time. [;)]

Chad
You just turn the top with a coin (or screwdriver even) to unlock.

Is gold and silver all they come in? I really prefer the ebony keys myself.

Very nice mod, Cal--just curious where you sourced them.  Did they come from a B & M music store or did you source them over the net?

Thanks!

I think Planet Waves has one that's not bulky. It also automatically cuts the string. They usually have an ad on the back flap of D'Addario strings. I had the Grovers on an electric I had. They work good. I think Schaller makes the ones with the knurled knob.

Kazz
Grover do them in Chrome, Black Chrome and Gold.  They also do ebony buttons.

Dugly
I got them from StewMac; after adding shipping to the UK, UK tax and Post Office charges... they were STILL cheaper than purchasing them here!  [B)]

The Planet Waves Auto-Trim is too bulky for my taste (it also has a knurled knob).  I'm happy with the trade-off of cutting my own strings.

No mods at all.  Remove originals, wipe headstock, install new lockers... voilà! [:D]

Anyone thinking of this mod needs to consider the different dimensions of Grover Original and/or Mini Locking Rotomatics® AND the thickness of their headstock.  StewMac give comprehensive diagrams and dimensions of both here (scroll down to Grover Locking: 3 left, 3 right).  Hope that's some help.
