We lost another great songwriter.

Here's one of his most beautiful lyrics

Nether Lands

High on this mountain
The clouds down below
I'm feeling so strong and alive
From this rocky perch
I'll continue to search
For the wind and the snow and the sky
Oh I want a lover and I want some friends
And I want to live in the sun
And I want to do all the things that I never have done
Sunny bright mornings and pale moonlit nights
Keep me from feeling alone
Now I'm learning to fly and this freedom is like
Nothing that I've ever known
Oh I've seen the bottom and I've been on top
But mostly I've lived in between
And where do you go when you get to the end of your dream
Off in the Nether Lands I heard the sound
Like the beating of heavenly wings
And deep in my brain I can hear a refrain
Of my soul as she rises and sings
Anthems to glory and anthems to love
And hymns filled with earthly delight
Like the songs that the darkness composes to worship the light
Once in a vision I came on some woods
And stood at a fork in the road
My choices were clear yet I froze with the fear
Of not knowing which way to go
Oh, one road was simple acceptance of life
The other road offered sweet peace
When I made my decision
My vision became my release

Rest in peace brother.

Ya, bummer, died too young. Dan'd say it's Part of the Plan. This is my favorite Fogelberg lyric;

There is no eden or
Heavenly gates
That you're gonna make it to
One day
But all of the answers you seek
Can be found
In the dreams that you dream
On the way.

Dan was awesome and I had the privledge to see him in concert several times, the last one being in 2003.  Here is my favorite!

Watching the sun
Watching it come
Watching it come up over the rooftops.

Cloudy and warm
Maybe a storm
You can never quite tell
From the morning.

Chorus
And it's going to be a day
There is really no way to say no
To the morning.

Yes it's going to be a day
There is really nothing left to
Say but
Come on morning.

Waiting for mail
Maybe a tale
From an old friend
Or even a lover.

Sometimes there's none
But we have fun
Thinking of all who might
Have written.

And maybe there are seasons
And maybe they change
And maybe to love is not so strange.

The sounds of the day
They hurry away
Now they are gone until tomorrow.

When day will break
And you will wake
And you will rake your hands
Across your eyes
And realize

That it's going to be a day
There is really no way to say no
To the morning.

Yes it's going to be a day
There is really nothing left to say but
Come on morning.

My Wife and I saw him in NJ when we were dating (1985).

He was awesome and yes... Netherlands is an amazing song.

Fogelberg never played anywhere near where I lived, so I never had the chance to catch him live, but I did listen to him quite a bit.  I know his later stuff was more positively reviewed, but I must admit I liked his first album, Fallen Angel the best.

Why?  Well, it wasn't necessarily that the music was that great, but that man did everything, and I mean EVERYTHING!!  He played every instrument on the album, did the lead vocals and the backing vocals, and even painted the artwork that was featured on the album cover.

Talk about a one man act, Dan Fogelberg was definitely that [;)] !!

So sad to see him leave so quickly [:(] !
