Need info on my mandolin
« on: September 24, 2008, 09:21:46 AM »
I'm trying to find out more info about my Washburn Mandolin. It has a serial # 158416 and per the website, does this mean it was made 1915?? It has a round back, 10 ribs with the two outside ones getting wider at the base. There are 17 frets, inlaid tortoise shell around the hole on the face. As far as I know it was my grandfathers. Any information about this instrument or where I can search would be appreciated. Thanks!

All pre-war washburn instruments had notoriously eratic serial numbers, so it does become a chore to determine when an instrument was really made.  There is, however,  a fantastic book on the subject titled Pre-war Washburns,  that can be found pretty easily at  It does take some studying,  because you've got to account for the individual appointments on the instrument.  Its entirely to convoluted to date an instrument without that particular resource.

good luck!
