hi,
i'm currently looking at one of these (a red one, like yours) for sale locally. now you've lived with the guitar for a while, have you thought about changing the pickups at all, or are you happy with the stocks?

Hi, Wully, and welcome to the forum!

I'm no pro and I use this for basement rock only. With that caveat in mind, I'm still completely happy with the stock pickups and, for that matter, the VCC controls. I'm playing through a Vox AD30VT so it's not like I'm pumping these through a full stack. I have considered dropping in a set of Seymour Duncan Hot-Rodded Humbuckers for US$130 but I haven't done it yet because, frankly, I don't feel the need. Nonetheless, it's tempting to consider that, with a pickup change, you can achieve what is essentially a WI66 at a substantially lower price.

I know others on here hold different views, have changed out both the pickups and replaced the VCC with standard volume/tone controls and have been very pleased with the results.

I continue to be very impressed with the quality and playability of the underlying guitar.

hi,
thank you for your reply. i think i'm going to try it out tomorrow. i've only seen it on the shop website. gonna see if they're up for a trade for my mex. 50's classic player strat. just can't get on with a strat! i think the strat (even used) would go for (slightly) more than they're doing  the WI45 for, so i think they'll go for it. otherwise, i'll have to sell first and buy later.
i mainly play in the bedroom, but once a week i go and jam in a rehearsal studio through my peavey classic 30.
i'll let you know what happens. thanks again!

Same here.
Never could get one of those to work right! Probably just a mental thing, huh?

for me, it just feels really awkward. the placement of the volume 'knob'. i like to rest my hand on the bridge, and i just can't get comfortable with the strat...

Yep, all that and more... and it's not like I didn't try.
I've had several of various incarnations over 40+ years after bandmates & others kept telling me I just HAD to have that Strat in my arsenal. I've still got one. I like the sound of SSS thru a hot Fender tube amp... I just can't play the damned alien thing!

well, i went to try the red WI45. even with the antique strings, i really liked the guitar. REALLY liked it. played nice, sounded very nice across the board. really liked the vcc feature. couldn't get close on the trade in for my strat, so it's on evilbay.

it WILL be mine!

Awesome Wully, love to see more converts to the playability and value, and overall awesomeness of the high end import Idols. Be sure to keep us posted.

I'm in the same boat. I love the comfort of the body, love the sounds, even love the scale length and the easy bends...but my right hand is always hitting things it shouldn't. the middle pickup, the volume knob.

I'm still trying though.

Same thing with soapbar P90s & the old tall toaster pups... I really like the different bite they produce but I'm always fumbling my pick on em.
