Dilemma: used WI66 Anc or new WI66 Pro
« on: September 03, 2009, 04:31:11 AM »
Hello,
I'm proud to be an X50Pro owner (Korea, EMG), but now I was offered a Washburn WI-66 ANC with a EMG 81/85 pickup set, nearly twice as cheaper as a new Idol Anc will be. I found that the Anc is very similar to Pro versions but it costs 1,5 times as much, why? Isn't that better to buy a new Pro than a used Anc for nearly the same price. Can you please help me decide?

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum Separanets.

The ANC is a limited edition designed by and built for Boogie Street Guitars, a Washburn dealer. While the basic platform is the same as the 66pro, electronics, finish, and some other specs are often very different.

you may want to dig around, or even contact the folks here, http://boogiestreet.com/
They may be able to give you more details.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Tio!

I visited the site. The guy (Eric http://boogiestreet.com/?tag=wi66anc) talks out of buying Indonesian idols. The one I'm regarding is Indonesian and it is about $1000 in stock here. And  $500 for a used item. So I'm not sure yet.

I have two Korean made x50's pro. One has an EMG set while the other is that I charged with a couple of Dimarzio Activators. They both are lovely, but I've always liked a les paul configuration.  I'm selling my WG-780 superstrat for the same price and just thought the WI66 Anc could be an ideal replacement for me.

I think you'd be happy with it. I've never heard anybody put a 66/67 through it's paces and not come away completely surprised.

I've got a Korean built Idol, same as a 66 but with a cavity and f-hole, known as a WI-67. Intended to give it a bit tonal variation of the solid 66.
I changed the electronics to standard LP configuration, and she's a beast.

Very nice guitar! I didn't know they make idols with f-holes. May be they aldo issue idols with a P90 set. I have a pair of P90s made in 60s, but I don't have a guitar to put them on.

Well I think I will either buy a new Idol Pro or a bit haggle about the price of the used Anc.

They only made the -67 for 3 yrs, 03 to 06. I found it hanging in a local shop on consignment. Actually, I think it found me.

They've been making a gold top 66 with P90's for a couple of years now, known as the WI66Pro G. But I don't know the mfg of the p'ups, I suspect yours may be a better than what they are putting in..I have no idea.

a link to the current Pro G:
http://www.washburn.com/electrics/idol-series/Page-2.html

Another idea, if you have a set like that available, is to find a WI64 or a used 66 and drop those p'ups in it, and do a standard LP wiring job with the pots. They(Washburn) love the 59/CC p'up combo, and for good reason, but a wish of mine is to get a solid 66 or WI68 and put PAF's or high end P90's or burstbuckers, a la Warren Haynes LP specs, and have a different guitar than my 67, with some significantly different sounds. Just a dream at this point, but you can see where I'm going with this.

Good luck with the decision making. Keep us posted!

I didn't ask about this before, but I'm wondering...what reasons did he give for talking you out of an indo idol?

At that used price ($500), you could find a really nice US Idol or WM series on the 'bay.

Much more guitar at that price IMHO. [8D]

custom shop Idol for 500 bones??
make a note of my email and PLEASE shoot me a heads up when that occurs. I've never seen a custom shop Idol quite that low.

BUT, I agree, you can get a lot of guitar, used, for that kind of cash.

Washburn released a ANC model I had one, the Boggie street version is the same with some extras done to it. The ANC body is about 1/2 inch thicker than a WI66, which I also had (WI66G with stack P90) and has an ebony fret board. Both where made in Korea.

I´ve owned one of the original imports by BSG,and frankly speaking those are some hardcore performers.
Very very well made, and as such cheap to pickup seing the quality they bring.
