What defines Vintage?
« on: February 16, 2010, 09:12:19 PM »

What defines Vintage for guitars? 20+?  25+?  30+?

Just curious, and another opportunity to say... wait for it...

rylandia

there, I did it again.

Actually I'm sure he doesn't care if it's in CAPS or not, as long as it gets mentioned.[;)]
Guitars, I have a few - but then again, too few to mention

Sometimes it's age, sometimes it's an era. I have a hard time thinking of my 1995 D12S's as vintage. I'd think 20+

...or anything unique, or unusual that we own or know of. It would be good to have a place for those, don't you think Greg? Like the '99 Blue Dolphin...

I think that since Washburn had such a long time not producing guitars, I think we have to use the term 'vintage' loosly. It's a whole different game with Fender or Gibson..

Washburn N2, Washburn F10S (En-Route)
I've got some other stuff too.. Everything from guitars to a Balalaika.

I might go with the analogy of antique @ 25 yrs. plus. Guitar lingo notwithstanding,
I have never used the term Vintage for something that was 10 yrs. old.
The conotation as Vintage is generaly used to describe the age, right. Like wine
is of a certain vintage, good yr. or bad. So to sum up: Do you think of vintage as a yr. of and by itself, as in
a 77' Reisling is a great Vintage. ( it is!) or do you go with Vintage meaning strictly older than 25 yrs.
as an antique....? I have a G2-V. I was told by Washburn that the serial # dates it to 1986. So in
2 years it'll be 25. Antique ( technically).

Vintage in it's strictest sense means the year a wine was produced. It might also by the same sense mean, the oldness of a wine. A synonymous phrase is time of origin.

Vint (wine)+ age (the oldness)

When talking of guitars, clothing, furniture or cars, the correct way to use it is vintage with a year, such as a vintage 1970 model, or a vintage 60's. MADE IN THIS YEAR  But alas, many instrument marketers have started using it such as vintage model when they mean copy of.

Us in the violin world have much more integrity,,, if someone uses the term (assuming they aren't a poser) a vintage Stradivarius, it means Stradivari made it (either himself or in his shop under his supervision), otherwise it will be presented as a Stradivarius Such&Such Copy or Stradivarius Such&Such Model.

You got to watch out for them Fifth Ave Admen. They like to ruin good words for everyone else by twisting them around.
