Not Vintage, but certainly "rare"--C124SWK
« on: February 22, 2010, 02:17:51 PM »
If you buy into the 3rd listing in Webster's definitions of rare:

Main Entry: 1rare
Pronunciation: \\#712;rer\\
Function: adjective
Inflected Form(s): rar·er; rar·est
Etymology: Middle English, from Latin rarus
Date: 14th century
1 : marked by wide separation of component particles : thin <rare air>
2 a : marked by unusual quality, merit, or appeal : distinctive b : superlative or extreme of its kind
3 : seldom occurring or found : uncommon

synonyms see choice, infrequent

...then by my reckoning I just sourced a rare Washburn.

My most recent acquisition is a Washburn C124SWK classical guitar.

I'll post photos of it later, once I get the high definition digital camera fired up and some decent lighting set up, but for now you can read all about it and see some photos in this thread on the classical board:

http://forums.washburn.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17298

You may ask why I consider it rare, after all it is only a medium priced classical guitar (street price $699)....well, my guitar carries serial #08100300 and I thought it might be the end of a 300 unit production run, so I sent Nick an email asking about it, here's his reply in part:

Hey Doug,

It was far less than 300.  We only sold 24 of the C124SWK.

thanks

Nick

Now, this one is nowhere near a DB quality build, but considering that all but one of the DB builds was offered in greater quantity than that, I believe this now discontinued model to be rare [:D] .

Washburn apparently produced a CE model of this guitar, too...of which I'm informed there were only 12 ever received by Washburn.

So, adding it all up, the total production of both variants of this model was 36.....I do know that there was one DB model of which only one was produced (or was it a JS model, I can't remember off the top of my head), the one jsmithsr has that was owned by Dan Fogelberg, but the rest of the DB models produced for Washburn would have been at least as great as the total producion of all C124SW models, no?

So, folks, until I manage to get more high-def photos produced, I'll hope you'll surf into the link I posted and enjoy the information on what I consider to be a rare Washburn model.

Cheers!

4 Presentations, 4 Paramounts, 25 Apaches, 50 Savannahs, 150 Cherokees. Or thereabouts. The earlier Cherokees have the smaller bridge plate, making them identical body wise (other than the shape of the bridge) to the other spruce/rosewood dreadnaughts Dana built that year.

No disrespect or ire intended, Rocket, I assure you....just putting the info in a place where I thought someone who was searching for this sort of information might be likely to find it (the newbs especially don't always know to get friendly with the search function).

Thanks for that, Pike....man, that Blue Dolphin is one beautiful guitar!  Considering Shiner's passion for the D'Aquisto models, I wonder if he's ever seen that.....
