yet another update ... I checked on the perpetually-airing-out guitar strap and case straps. The guitar straps smell OK now. It's the rubber sliders on the case straps that still stink badly.

On the Washburn website, if you look at the Rover, it says in red on the left that there has been complaints of the smell/stink. You are to contact them and they will send a new strap and to throw the other one away.

I washed the shoulder straps for the case and hung them up for a few days, sliding the rubber pads along the strap a few times, and used lots of Febreeze together with leaving it open for a couple of days, about half-a-dozen times.

Sounds like I may have been lucky compared to others here.

Thanks for that info! Interesting that they're finally moving on that.

I used basically the same approach and the smell has greatly decreased but has not gone completely, soaking the straps in water and some handwash of all things was quite effective, Febreze in the case was very good!

hello,

i bought a used 84' Squier Bullet S-3 MiJ with original Fender case.  it stink so bad, reeks smell of cigarettes...  it made the MiJ Bullet stink (smell bad) i had to leave the guitar out of the case while i resolve the stench.

i tried the baking soda and it didn't work, febreze, lysol air freshner, glade... all didn't work

then i remembered a old school natural smell remover... lemon / orange skin or peel can absorb the bad odor and neutralize the smell, leaving a lemon or citrous scent... i prefer the citrous smell, its not overpowering and it disipate in time...  NOTE: make sure the peel is not wet.  if you want to be extra careful...  put the orange or lemon peel on a small saucer or plastic cover so no direct contact with case.  let it sit for a day or two with lid closed.  then open to check.

hope this tip is of help to any one with stinky problem...  if you play bad... practice more. :D
mod, mod... and try to play   :)

Late to the party, but one way to destink an enclosed area is to put a laundry sheet (like you would use to dry your clothes) in the stinky item.

Don't know if this would help with the Rover's case, but it is a cheap experiment.

The Rover I smelled had a chemical oder to it, just like my Fender CD60 did.   I sold that guitar fast.  I wonder if the new ones still have that smell.  Seems it would be hard to sell those for very long, bad for business.    Tom.    :)
