Is my Cumberland J28SCEDL sunburst fake? HELP ASAP
« on: May 21, 2010, 06:14:30 PM »

http://http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230466005876&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I recently purchased this guitar from ebay in Pennsylvania. It has a washburn authentic sticker in the inside, but it's offset and next to the model number there is NO SERIAL NUMBER. This seems really sketchy to me, but I don't know whether this was something that was ever made or not. Can someone help me out, please? Thank you. The ebay sale link is posted above. Help me asap

If there is not an SN on the tag, look up inside the body on the block where the neck joins the body and see if there is one stamped.  My guess would be that it is either a prototype or a B-stock.  Check the back of the headstock for either a 'B' or a '*', which would indicate a B-stock.  By the shape of the tag I'm gonna guess prototype, which is not necessarily a bad thing, and sometimes the B-stocks are just minor finish blems.
However, this guitar was advertised as 'New' so if it is either a proto or B-stock, it's not 'New' - i.e. Washburn probably will not honor the lifetime warranty, and I have no idea if this dealer is an Authorized Washburn dealer, which is also needed to get the warranty.

If you like the guitar and want to keep it, get it checked out and see if there is a SN and call Washburn CS for assistance.
Guitars, I have a few - but then again, too few to mention

It's an actual production model... Toaster was selling some a couple years back. Read the links.

I was reading through the links, and saw that a sunburst model existed and Dave was selling some, but my ADD took over and I skimmed through the rest. I must have missed any mention of models without a SN on the tag, which was what I found unusual and said to call Customer Service.  It may be legit, and the only way to find out is if WB can verify it and that the dealer is Authorized so he can register the warranty.

The upper bout looks too big, or there isn't enough of a waist for it to be a true Washburn jumbo.  I have heard of counterfeit guitars coming out of Asia (oddly enough, that's where they're made), Maybe it's just the pic, bad angle or it was resized.  It looks odd.  How does it play?

Sure... but who makes counterfeit Washburns... and why would anyone?

Most definitely, and I agree... why would anyone want to phony up a Washburn?  I ended up giving mine to a friend.  It was a nice guitar though.
