Here's my weekend project....a cleaning, new strings and photographs. This model.... 19 fret version, with mother of pearl headstock inlay, was made in 1928 to early 1929 only.

From the Washburn Acoustic Guitar Collection:

Hi Jim, Hubert here.

Congrats - that is a beautiful looking 5238 you got there!

As to the dating, the rare 19-fret versions started to appear somewhere in 1928-9 during the Stewart era. But the serial number on your guitar seems to indicate that it was assembled and/or shipped by Regal around 1932 with parts acquired out of the Stewart bankuptcy sale.

Thanks Keef (Hubert) for the additional info.  I'm not a real expert on older Washburns.  I do use PRE WAR INSTRUMENT STYLES to get me in the ball park when trying to determine the approximate age of an instrument.  It's an excellent reference guide.

Looks like we'll be focusing our attention on some of the older, surviving, Washburn models (buying for the collection).......any additional information or advice you could pass along to us would be greatly appreciated.
