So..."new" Idol?
« on: June 29, 2010, 03:04:32 PM »
Whatever happened with that?  What's the new name for the shape?  I haven't seen any info anywhere...

Has it been axed completely?  The neck-thru version wasn't that bad...

High praise indeed... what every manufacturer is shooting for in their new model line-up.

they're gonna split the line into 3
1st one (the Idol) will be called Original Idol and will include only 5 models
the 2nd one (the Les Paul replica/false idol) simply Idol and will have 5 models
3rd one will be called Mighty Idol (wtf?!) also only 5 models
none of the above will have a neck through construction

what a shame, can't believe Rudy sold his company to these guys.

The guitars they refer to as the Original Idol bear very little resemblance to the real original design. None of the original models that are currently shown on the website are in the new catalog. When they said they are keeping the original Idol, it is not really the case.

Sad news. Where are you guys viewing the new line? What's available online is the same Idol lineup we've seen for a while now. Even the announcement regarding the clone direction is gone.

Well there's nothing in that lineup that makes me excited about the release. Just looks like a half hearted attempt at reintroducing the WP models of Gibson lookalikes, and that series didn't exactly sell like hot cakes. I mistakenly expected more !!

the new owners don't like the Idol, that's obvious, they simply took some of the USA models and tried
copying them to an import model, dropping the standards down in the process, hardly any Duncans or Grover's tuners except for a few guitars
I guess they prefer replicas over originals.
what a shame... I usually do a Washburn electric search on ebay to see what's new, there's been nothing new for months.

Gibson wen't through this with during the Norlin era, BC Rich went through this, I guess now it's Washburn's turn...

Well if you think about it, the WI66 Pro is an import copy of the WI68/WI568, and the WI45 is the same thing, minus the Duncans and Grovers.

I'm guessing the Mighty Idol (God, what a stupid name) will be a thick body, almost like the Pilsens?

who knows. The WI66 is a great guitar, and I feel that KISS...just have one model, well appointed, couple of colors, maybe a choice between duncan HB's and Duncan P90's, which they can obviously do at a good price point....and let it ride. Then, fine, do the same with the straight up LP copy if you must.

You're right, Civolee, that they new folks plain don't dig the idol, and had to be worked over to keep it at all. I'm thinking one model, a 66 caliber, would be the way to go.

Ah well, must be a reason I'm not in marketing.

Cheers mates. Enjoy what you've got, and hope for the best.

Hum, I can't find any evidence of the new 'old' style Idols, would be quite interested to see what they look like.

The only ones I can find are the new style, they're all listed on the UK Distributer's website as coming very shortly (or last month, apparently). Full list over on Soundtech.co.uk:

www.soundtech.co.uk/washburn/news/2010-idol-series

But the current line up one there still shows the HM Seres like my beloved WI556, even though it was the last one they had (last in the Country apparently, I bought it as soon as I got my hands on it!)

Any pics of the new 'old' Idols would be most appreciated.

As you say, WI45 has the Randall pickups rather than Duncans. However, it does have Grover 18:1 tuners. In my view, very nicely fitted for the price. I like the Randalls.
