NGGD (New Gorgeous Guitar Day) HB35S Content
« on: August 22, 2010, 07:15:07 AM »
Hi Everyone,
I've been looking for an HB35 for some time, hoping to find a MIJ model, but that hasn't been happening (so far). [;)] Anyway, I came across a 1993 35S model that looks like it has been a case queen for most of it's life. I found a tiny smear near the binding (factory defect) and one ding on the bottom and other than that it seems perfect.

It came with what looked like a set of 9-42s, but missing the high E string. [:D] Intonation was not the greatest, and I wanted strings that were slightly heaver, so I put on a set of 10-46 Ernie Ball Classic Pure Nickels. Intonation was almost perfect after the string swap, so I am guessing that is what it should have had on it.

While checking it out, my wife kept walking by and finally said something like wow--that's the best sounding guitar you have. I agree. [8D]

I snapped a few pics yesterday. I am not a professional photographer (obviously), but thought some of you would enjoy them.

Nice! Factory strings were 11's when new. 10's will work OK. Just needs the intonation touched up a bit.

Thank you, guys! I am loving it.

Nick, thank you for the tip. I haven't used 11s before, so I might see what they have at the local shop. For the record, the wound strings on the 10-46 set were very close on intonation--one tweak and they were there. The others not so much. The intonation really seemed off with the 9-42 set, though.

I have been using EB 11's Regular Slinky. Lots of tone from those on my HB35. They are a bit stiffer but it's all about the tone for me.

Nice double skunk line on the neck I might add, sets it off really well.

Forgot to add: What amp are you playing it through. I Have a VOX VT30 dialed in to a Fender Tweed tone.

Thanks luvmyshiner.

Nick, I am playing it through an Egnater Tweaker, using the AC (Vox) tone stack. Very pleasing sound. For the record, my current master volume setting is about 2:00 and the gain at about 8:00, so the power tubes are just starting to work, but the sound is very clean with some shimmer.

Coincidentally, I was using the USA (Fender) tone stack earlier tonight along with an LPB-1 to see if I could do some poor man's Dumble OD tones, but it wasn't working for me, and I lost some of that rich sound the HB35 can produce. This is a seriously great sounding guitar. (I have said that before, haven't I? [:p])

Personally, I like my HB35 better than my USA Fender Strat. Don't get me wrong. I have one fine sounding Strat and will not get rid of it. I spent the better part of a year playing all the Strats I could get my hands on till one spoke to me. Then another 2 months tweaking it to get my Tone from it. I just don't like sounding like every other guitar out there.

I have had other 335 types but this one has a very distinct tone that separates it from the pack. Yes, I have been tweaking on it also.

I understand. Strats have been my favorite electric for as long as I have been interested in guitars. Still, this HB35 is severely testing my fidelity. [:0]

Comparing Strats & 335's is like comparing apples & intake manifolds!

I don't know why, but this reminded me of a YouTube clip where Yingwe Malmsteen was playing his Strat with an orchestra. Until then, I had never heard such a thing. Fortunately, neither has most of the rest of humanity.

Thank you. It did not show up as well as I'd hoped. Perhaps someday I can get it outside when the sun is shining and there are no clouds. . . .

Rocket I think you missed the point. I was not comparing, but you knew that.
