Is my guitar a fake?
« on: November 07, 2010, 06:02:11 AM »
Hi,
Sorry may not be exactly the right place to post and I know virtually nothing about guitars.

I've been asked to sell an acoustic guitar on Ebay by a friend (it belonged to his son).  It appears to be a Washburn and looks very like a D10, with a black plastic panel to the front.
But the label inside claims that the model is a D5 and that doesn't seem to appear in Washburn's archive.  The label also has a printed serial number 98081281.  It has a transfer saying 'Washburn' at the top of the handle (?), above the screws.

I understand that the son bought it on Ebay for around Â$50 a few years ago, but don't know if it was imported (we are in the UK).

I'm wondering if it's likely to be a fake, because if so I won't be selling it for them.

Nobody would bother to expend the effort and risk to fake a low-end guitar.

The model is probably one made for a specific dealer. Dealers can order guitars for their own companies, as long as they order a set number. Like Rocket said, no one is going to go to the trouble of faking a lower end guitar.
