guitar vs amp

I was at a music store yesterday and somebody told me any guitar can sound good through a good amp. So,what do you guys think? Which is more responsible for the quality of sound?

Depends on one's definition of good.
A dogsh1t guitar player can't make a $40K guitar sound good... just as a guitar-god can't make a dogsh1t guitar sound good... although a decent guitar player can make any decent guitar sound decent.
The talent is attached to the hand... not the tool. An amp is just another tool... it just makes the good and the bad significantly louder!

true to an extent...you can color the sound of any guitar with a good amp. But what you hear is the result of all three combined, the guitar and p'ups, the amp, and most importantly, to Rocket's point, the player.

Not sure why you ask, but if you had to choose where to spend the coin, I'd still opt for the guitar....and spend every possible waking moment with it in YOUR hands that you can. Then, regardless what you run it through, good sounds will emanate. As you're able to afford better amps with the sonic qualities you prefer, your SKILLS will only please you that much more.

I guess the point is that, you could be playing a '59 Paul through a Dumble, and a poorly barred G is still gonna sound lame.
