Thump when turning the amp on
« on: August 30, 2011, 10:21:40 PM »
I have Washburn BD40R amplifier. Every time I turn the amplifier on, I hear thump in the speaker. It doesn't really matter if volume is set to min or not.

Just curious if that's normal or if the amp is defective because I bought the amp used.

Thanks.

I'm not familiar with it, but is this a bass amp?  If so, it may have a compressor that may be engaging when you turn on the amp, which could cause the thump regardless of volume.

Okay, just noticed that it's not a bass amp.  Sounds instead like a loose speaker connection to me.

Sounds normal to me. When you turn on an amp, and power is supplied to the componenets, they are going to react to the power.

This is a solid state guitar amplifier. I have built other (non-guitar) solid state amplifiers and some of them do have the thump when turning on or off but this one is very loud. I guess the 12 speakers contributes to the loudness.

Thanks for replies.

I've had the reverb tank make a lot of noise when turned on, but it wasn't anything wrong with it.
