Win-std question about 'maple cap'
« on: November 27, 2011, 02:20:21 PM »
I saw one of these in my local guitar center used recently for 199$ and quickly went home to look up the specs on it. Every page I read says it comes with a 'maple cap' as well as a 'maple veneer'. So this must mean the cap is real. yes? Another question is, how are the tuners on this model? All I see is that they are 'die cast' tuners, nothing specific about their ratio or how well they stay in tune on the web. Thanks.

It's a maple cap and yes, it's real. The tuners are excellent 15:1 gear ratio tuners and will stay in tune nicely.

By maple cap you mean something that is thicker than a mere veneer, right?

Also, how do these 15:1 tuners compare with low end grovers, like the ones that come on epiphones now?

They are ¾” when we glue them on.  After carving they are about 5/8” in the middle and less on the edges.
Yes, the tuners used are comparable quality.

My gold top WINSTD has those turners and the hold very nice to tunes. Also, and I might be put it over one topic, an old friend has tried my guitar and he said it has a very natural, vintage sound. He has a Epiphone Sheraton II with a pair of Gibson Classic '57. He asked what type of Duncan USM are those. I said, pairing with Wshburn's info, they are ceramic!! He was amazed!
