When was this washburn made
« on: February 24, 2012, 10:06:29 PM »
HI there, I'm new to this site. We purchased a washburn from a pawn shop in the late 80's. Inside the on the label says w-220. Up in the guitar I think it is called the neck block are the numbers 730811. I found a picture of an old add on this forum that looked like my guitar, but not sure. Is this a collectors item. I don't want to send my son to school with it if it is.

Welcome. Since it is 6 numbers, and you bought it in the late 80's. it probably is a 1987. I am not even sure what a W220 is. But some one will be able to help you. also have you searched here, and on google?  Tom.   :)

Imported from Japan...this is a Beckmen era Washburn....made late 1973 to 1975.
MSRP in 1974 was $169.00 without a HSC.
Book on this model is $350-$375 N Mint condition....and add another $175.00 if you have a period HSC by Washburn.
The W-220 in  "The Washburn Acoustic Guitar Collection "  carries an insurance {replacement} value of $750.00....it's in near mint condition and has a period HSC.

A portion of the collection can be seen at:

Hope this helps.

thanks for your help, It must be from 1973 because the label was showing signs of age when we bought it 89. We have received a lot of compliments on its beauty that is why I wanted to do some digging into the history.

I recently snagged a very nice condition vintage American built Gruhn/Walker Guild GF25 w/ original case for $700. Paid $225 some years back for my Beckmen W240 w/ case... $750's way up there for a used laminated import...
