N4 FOR SALE
« on: April 13, 2012, 06:56:11 AM »

Hi Folks,
a young player in my area has bought a used N4, he's left it with me to check over, set up, and get my opinion. Really nice guitar, but he's not happy with it, as it appears to be a put together from Funky Monkey or official parts from Washburns clearout. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it sound or playing wise, it's the finish of it he's not happy with, (Stain on the neck sanded off, the pics explain). Being honest about it, if I was still playing out, I wouldn't be writing this, I'd have bought it from him. Anyway the long and short of it is he wants to sell it, and I have asked him not to advertise it, until I've asked on the forum to see if anyone here is looking for a used N4 at a reasonable price.

I'm no expert on wood, but I think it's a Swamp Ash body.
This one's different pup wise with DiMarzio super distortion and distortion 2 pickups ( bridge, neck respectively). Very Metal.
Has a Schaller trem, Washburn tuners, and the usual Ebony board with very little fret ware.
The rear of the headstock does have numbers on it (which are difficult to see under the stain), but the first two numbers are 96.
The action is low, and the electrics all work perfectly.
The back trem cover is missing, but it does have the Trem Arm.
There is also a full set of Dimarzio Straplocks in the case.
It does have a Washburn case, but this has definately seen better days. It's good enough to protect it in transport, but is quite beaten up with bits missing etc.

He's asking four hundred quid for it, which he says he paid for it, given the quality of the hardware and the build, and sound, (whoever put it together) I think is a real fair deal, bordering on cheap.
He will post anywhere in the UK at agreed cost, but he doesn't mind if you wish to arrange the collection and delivery yourself, which would suit him better as you could then decide if you would prefer if insurance needs to be taken out.
The guitar plus case weighs in at over seven and a half kilos, so not a cheap bundle to send. He does have a Paypal account that belongs to a family member that could be used for the transaction, which guarantees both parties safety.

Anyway check out the pics, and PM me if you need to know anything else, or are interested. In the meantime I'm gonna plug in and play while I've got the chance.

Update on this, I've decided to buy it, as it's a cracking instrument and he had an offer of £375 from a local ad. I got it for that price and I'm gonna hang on to it for a while. So if anyone is interested later, when the money situation improves give me a shout. I've already got an N3, so it won't be so hard to part with. I've been playing it over the weekend, and the DiMarzios give this guitar a great sound. Has anybody else tried these pups in their N series????

Looking at the pics, I'm not even sure it is or was ever an n4... at least not in its entirety.
I thought that proper N4s had a genuine Floyd rose, not a licensed one? Also, does it say made in USA on the back of the head with the serial number? The pickups, as you say, are completely different to any standard n4. Are the tuners Grover 18-1s? Is the neck Paduak or stained that colour?
I agree that this could be a bit of a parts bin "Frankenstein's monster" made of several different guitar's parts, as you eluded to in your first post.
For the price paid, it is still probably a very good value guitar, made of quality parts and I bet it plays well and sounds nice, I am just not sure that you should advertise it as a bonefide N4.

Well, at first I wasn't going to reply to your post as I thought "He's new" but on consideration I thought it's worth pointing out that before you go jumping on a post with your personal opinions, you should, at the very least, do a background check into what you're stating. It's painfully obvious that this never occurred to you, EG
"I thought that proper N4s had a genuine Floyd rose, not a licensed one?"
"Are the tuners Grover 18-1s?"

To help you to remedy the situation I have put a link to the 1994 archives which may help.

One other small but significant point is that nowhere in my post have I stated that it's a "bona fide N4" So what is your point, and what should I call it?

Sorry, I appear to be wrong on a few points. Yes, I am new and as such need (and want) to learn about these guitars and their history, and I appreciate the links you have put up. Unfortunately, other than Wiki and what is on here I haven't found much.
I thought they all had the Grover 18-1s as part of the buzz feiten tuning thing?
To me, an N4 has to have the 59 and 500 combo, hence saying I didn't think it was a bone fide N4.
I have obviously angered you with my post and this was not my intention.

Is it just the vintage n4 that has genuine FR, 18-1s etc... ?
