Replacing tapered fit endpin with screw in strap button
« on: April 17, 2012, 12:06:57 AM »
I want to replace the endpin on my D10SRCE with a screw in strap button because I've read some stories of endpins falling out of the D10SCE guitars so I want some extra security. However, how should I go about doing this? A screw is definitely too small to screw into the existing hole. How do I patch up the hole so I can put in a strap button?

Mark the endpin flush with body.
Remove endpin.
Saw off endpin at mark.
Wood glue endpin back into hole (use good glue).
Tape around to protect finish.
Sand off any remaining until flush with tape.
Drill into center of stump and install strap button.
Remove tape.

The endpin is plastic though. Do i need to replace it with wood? and how would i get wood the same taper as the current plastic endpin?

Oh... ok. Yes, should be wood.
In that case use a tapered dowel from a hardware store or Lowe's or Home Depot.
If you can't find exact degree of taper, get one close enough and sand to fit. A good wood glue will fill any small imperfection.

For the taper plug one could probably get away with any premium wood glue like Gorilla brand... but my luthier uses animal hide glues for new builds and Titebond brand liquid hide glue for quick but permanent repairs:

Thanks for the reply! Is this titebond good enough.

The liquid hide glue isn't available at any nearby stores.

And i heard it was bad to use Gorilla because it expands when it dries?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm completely new to this stuff so I don't want to mess up and destroy my guitar.
