XB-500 Bass Serial Number and Replacement Pickups
« on: April 22, 2013, 01:16:40 AM »
Hi All.

I have just purchased a second hand Bantom XB-500 with the serial number S7041327.  Can someone please confirm that it is a '97 and not a 2007 or an 87?  What factory and wood please?

Also I want to replace the pickups.  I have 951 & 953 pickups.  They look like soapbar pickups to me but they have the screws on the flat sides like a Jazz pickup which so far is hard to find.  Has anyone replaced these pickups and if so with what?  How did it cosmetically look?

Thanks in advance.

Dom

The XB-500 was made 1994-1999, so odds are yours is 1997.

No luck on the pickups. The only thing even close was what Austin used for the AU779 "Intruder" bass, a StingRay clone. What they did was actually take two Jazz-type pickups, saw the ears off one side each, & glue 'em together.

For me, an XB without the guts just ain't an XB anymore -- YMMV. But if you're going to change all that, why not add a pickguard? There's any number of Bartolini soapbars (2-, 3-, & 4-point back-mount) you could just drop right in.

Okay, I've spotted replacement pickups with a similar form-factor:

Definitely the "double J" shape. But I have no idea what the make is, or what they might've been pried from, & would appreciate any info.
