Which model is this?
« on: June 02, 2013, 02:30:24 PM »
Hey everyone,

I'm thinking of buying my first electric guitar. I found this one second hand but I'm not sure which one it is, it may be an mg104 or mg154..

Other things I'd like to know is what genres suit this guitar, and what it would be worth approximately.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Jvg56,

Welcome to the Washburn forum...  You're assessment is correct that the guitar is from the Mercury Series, and like you It looks like either the MG104 or MG154...

I found some information in Vintage Washburn website - vintagewashburn.com/Electrics/Mercuryelectric.html

The 1993 Custom Shop Catalog - (page 4 and page 5) www.washburn.com/media/pdfs/catalogs/Washburn1993CustomShopCatalog.pdf

The difference between Made in USA and Import is determined by the letter 'W' on the pickups...  without is USA and with 'W' is import.  by virtue of being a USA made guitar would immediately make it more valuable...  but to me being Custom Shop is neat in itself.

Hope you get her.  Peace out!!!

One of the links you posted states MSRPs of 1800 and 1100 bucks but I assume this is not current value?
Oh, and what genres would suit this guitar?

Just to really make sure it is a good buy ;D

LoL, you're right...  Washburn makes good instruments and such but the MSRP is just recommended price, actual value is how much someone is willing to spend to buy it... and usually they don't get enough attention and respect..  I guess you can say Washburn's are sleepers and only a select few know their actual worth.  Also note the value is dependent on the condition of the guitar itself... mint or very good = 9.5/10 get the highest price and poor condition, get lower price.

I don't own one so i can't say... I do have 2 Maverick BTM, a red and a blue, both are upgraded and i know both are flexible in any music genre.

The "value" is a slippery thing, depending upon whether you're insuring it, trading it in at Guitar Center, selling it on Craigslist... okay, I'll skip the rest of the spiel.

The USA Mercurys are just goshdarned nice guitars; wouldn't mind having one myself.

Setting aside the Blue Book, let me check eBay for MG90-MG154. There's a few similar (mas o menos) guitars that've sold in the past two months:
  • MG100 -- $419 + $34
  • MG120 -- $450 + $50
  • MG104 -- $445.97 + $60
  • MG104 -- $535 + $45

That's just the ones I can confirm have sold (as usual for eBay, there's a 104 that seems to have sold at least twice so far...). The final one has a case like your photo.

The Blue Book says the MG154 is worth $175-$225 more than the MG104 -- at a fast scan around the Internet, the 104 is MUCH easier to find, so +$200 may be a reasonable uptick for the 154.

I spotted an import ("W" pickup, Floyd, maple) version going for $180 + $50. Tempting.
