There are lots of good starter basses out there. Main thing is to get the best quality you can afford. If that means not buying an amp for awhile, do it, and learn to play until you can afford the amp. That would be better than getting an elcheapo amp and an elcheapo bass. For starter 5 strings your best bet are the various ones that come out of Korea. The Washburn XB125 has dual active pickups and represents good value for the money. I dont like the XB105 because it only has one pickup and its passive. The T25 Taurus is real nice too, and it neck thru body, which gives it a better sustain and tone, and easier access to the high notes. Of course as a beginner you dont really need that yet. The last one available right now is the RB2502. It has the new brass loaded head which is good idea, but I dont know why they didnt incorporate it into some of the other models. I'd say you should try the XB125, T25, and RB2502, and dont bother with the XB105. For the price, the XB125 may be hard to beat though, for a beginner.

Accept2,you dont know what your f**king talking about. If anything, he should get an Ibanez because that is the best brand for its price. As for a 5 string, the GSR 205 is the best deal you can get for a beginner. Dont make the same mistake i made and buy a washburn. With the Ibanez you can play almost any style(slap, thumb, pick, fingertsyle) and they will all sound BAD ASS. and its only 280$. I wish i would have known what im telling you when i first started out.

5 string Starter,

first answer these questions, what style are you looking to play or what players are you trying to sound like?  Define cheap, give a dollar amount or range, $200-$300?  Under $500?  Under $700?  I'm not trying to give you a hard time, but it makes a difference.
I'm a working musician and I play with a washburn bass.  I play funk, folk, polka, jazz, blues, metal, you name it.  I can tell you the positives and negative of other brands.  I'm not a shill for Washburn, but I'm here cause I think the instruments are under rated.
Just to give you some models, the Squire line of fender (jazz or p-bass) are good starters and universal, the Sam Ash Carlo Robelli's are nice for under $200(kind of like dating a fat girl, nice but you don't want your friends to see you with one..no offense to fat ladies here),  The OLP(Guitar center's brand made by  Musicman) is still a few drafts away from being respectable, Ibanez has 2 good basses(the Ergodyne and the Musician) and they are both over $500 and one isn't even in production any more(the Musician was played by Sting when he was still with the Police) and they are rock basses.  As for washburn, the XB 125 is a good starter or if you can get a little more scratch, the T25.  If you can find one(and you probabaly will) try the XB 500!  I have an xb 400 and they are great basses.  good wood, bartolini pick ups(made for washburn)and a quick neck.  These are versitile instruments.  My complaint in the lower lines is the hardware(pickups, bridges, & Tuners).  This is a flaw with most manufacturers.  When they cut corners on the wood and construction too, then you have real problems.  Fender, Carlo Robelli, & Washburn have good contruction and wood, so my nod goes to washburn on the Bartolini's.  I hope this helps you out.  if you have more questions, then someone here will give you a good educated answer.

I play five string too!

what do I think about when i play?  Left finger, right finger, left finger, thumb...Doh!

Its good that you came back fourstring. We need to get the Jam Groups more lively with knowledgable players. Other companies have sucessful forums, but Washburn's forum, so far, has been a dud.....If it continues in this downward spiral, I can see them being closed, and an independant forum would have to be created. Not that it would be a bad thing, but its pretty sad when manufacturers are embarrassed by their users. Its already happened with Jackson guitars and their forum, and I see the same thing happening here.......

If youre gonna play Korn, go for the XB125........The price they sell it in the store (street price) should be in your budget.

5 String,

You may be in luck.  I was just on ebay and there is a washburn xb 500 for $275.  use this link and you have till July 29th
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2547236234&category=4713
it has active pickups and it's a very good bass.  I have the XB 400 and you can fieldy out on this thing.  For $400 there was even an XB 600 six string. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2547596587&category=4713
I suggest you go to your nearest washburn dealer and see if they have an XB on hand...they should, and try it for your self.  roll off the bass and you'll be snow blind.  push to the bridge pickups and you'll be a freak on a leash.  I think you'll be happy either way.  The XB 500 is well worth it.  Let me know how things turn out.
