D-61SW12 Prairie Song 12-String
« on: January 30, 2016, 08:03:25 PM »
Just bought a D-61SW12 for 100eur.
I haven't played it yet, it has to wait a few weeks until I pick it up from where it's stored now.
My first 12-string and the only instrument without maple body in my current collection  ;)
I hope there are no problems with the neck angle, otherwise it will be a very nice deco object.
It looks like this:

Any body played a model like this?
My Washburns: D-20SN (1988) - D-30SN (1989) - D-61SW12 (1989) - D-66SW (1979)
Other: Alhambra A4 Steelstring (2015) - Epiphone Sheraton (1988) - Walden CG 2010 (~2010) - Epiphone MM-30s Mandolin (~1990)

And here's the backside foto.
If the specialists are around, can anyone tell if it is rosewood or ovankol?

Very handsome 12'er.  Here is a bit of skinny for you.

D61 S(W) PRAIRIE SONG
- dreadnought style, solid spruce top, round soundhole, rosewood pickguard, three-stripe bound body, five-stripe rosette, rosewood back/sides, mahogany neck, 14/20-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlay, rosewood bridge with pearl dot black pins, rosewood veneer on peghead, three-per-side chrome diecast tuners, available in Natural finish, mfg. mid-1980s-1994.
Grading 100% Excellent Average
N/A $550 - 650 $325 - 400
Last MSR was $1,200.
Add $100 for Equis II electronics.
In 1992, the W was dropped from the name. In 1994, ovankol back/sides replaced rosewood.

D61 SW 12 12-String
- similar to D61 SW, except in 12-string configuration, six-per-side tuners, mfg. mid-1980s-1991.
Grading 100% Excellent Average
N/A $600 - 700 $375 - 450
Last MSR was $940.

Re the tone wood.  Hard to tell from the pics.  But, a gander at the serial number will help.  If the build date is post 1994, then it's very likely ovankol

very nice find its a  Japanese Yamaki build and was at the point where they were about ready to switch makers the way you can tell is the pickguard being laguered over had a Yamaki built guitar that had just a killer sound.
this is my last 12er from Washburn just cant stand the idea of selling it as it was the very first 12 when they brought back the name ( 1973/4 )
does it have a V head or is it flat top

Thanks ship, yours is also nice! How is the action/neck angle on yours?

It's the V-head.

Front of headstock:

I'll post the serial when I'm back with the guitar - in a few weeks  . can't wait :(

Hi folks,
I finally could start to inspect and use my new guitar, as it is stored in a place i visit only 2-3 times a year.
The serial number is 95439. There is no Prairie Song Stamp inside, only the washburn logo, and the model and serial number on the neck block.
The general state is good and only a few small cosmetic dents. But there also seems some structural things. The bridge is lifting. There is a small crack on the binding along the end block, and both pieces of the back are a bit warped. Around the neck/body transition the finish is cracked. The top is showing a belly. Fret wear is only on frets 1-3. The strings on it were rusty and lifeless.
It was very greasy, so cleaned it with furniture cleaning tissues, which worked well.
Due to the bridge lift, I wanted to keep the tension low, so I restringed with only the standard 6 strings, from a 10-50 light 85/15 bronze 12-string set and voilà, it sounds already great!
I´ve been playing it for a few days now in standard and EBEABE tuning (DADGAD 1 full tone higher, for better intonation). Action is great, plenty of space for my fingerpicking, only the 1st string is a little close to the fretboard border.
Nothing has "moved" so far on the bridge or the body, but I guess having it inspected and fixed by a luthier would be advised.
I´m very happy with it´s sound, very full and warm with nice sustain for my taste, and different from all my other guitars. My preferred for the moment... :)

In contrary to the blue book info, I`m sure my guitar has an ebony fingerboard with black plastic binding.
