Ace Frehley AF-40V 2005 Prototype Guitar
« on: July 15, 2017, 09:18:12 AM »
Does anyone have any info on this particular guitar? I know in 2014 a black/red one popped up with a story that in 2005 Washburn made just this 1 guitar for consideration of reissuing the AF-40V, but then they decided not to do so, so the project was scrapped and the black/red prototype was the only guitar made at that time. It may be true the black/red AF-40V was the only black/red one made in 2005, but it's not true it was the only AF-40V made in 2005, because I own a black/silver one. Did Washburn make just 1 and 1 only prototype of each color in 2005, because I've never seen any others pop up anywhere? Any info or thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure it is a prototype. I'm just going by what the owner claimed about the black/red one that popped up in 2014. But I don't think it's a sample because it has a Washburn serial #. And I don't think there was any kind of mass production of them in 2005 because there would've been more than 2 of them pop up in 12 years. I'll post pics as soon as I find somewhere to host them.

I don't think it's an Ed Roman, but I could be wrong. I've researched the "Ace in the Hole" from Ed and it doesn't seem to have the same features. I actually talked to Ed many years ago about buying one, but he was so rude about it that I didn't do it. Here's the link, photos and story of the black/red one that popped up in 2014. I'll post pics of mine as soon as I get them hosted.

The listing link, that you gave, indicates to me that these were samples or maybe a special order....and they were made in Korea.

A more plausible story, at least to me, would be that US Music asked their vendors for samples of models that were being considered for reissue.   Keep in mind, US Music would sell the freebie  samples....just like they would a production model.  Only difference is there was more profit in the sample.

There's also the possibility US Music simply ordered 6 or 8 of these in 2005 as incentives (gifts)  to dealers.... or maybe a one time order for one of their retailers...especially if they have serial numbers and a Made in Korea sticker on them.

Here are pics of mine. It has the same exact features and hardware of the black/red one that claimed to be a prototype and the serial #'s are only 16 digits apart.

Very cool guitar....(I saw your picture post before photobucket blocked the link)

Sorry I couldn't be more help.....maybe WB-nick could chime in on this subject.  I'm not sure that he was with Washburn in 2005, but he may have some knowledge of this short run.
