Hey guys,
I recently picked up a nice N4 neck+body that was built by a luthier a few months back. The body is mahogany, and a really nice cut of wood. I would have picked alder like the original N4s if I had spec'ed it out, but whatever I always enjoy mahogany. Anyways, I seem to remember reading that the Davies models got 3 coats of tung oil applied with sandpaper. ....but my google foo is failing me and I can't confirm that. I'd like to know what others think about using that as a finish. I like the "wood" look and frankly I don't mind this getting dirty over time - because that's awesome.
My other question is whether I should fill the grain with a darker material to get greater contrast with the grain before applying oil (or whatever you guys recommend). I *think* filling the grain is the way to go, but I would love to hear from others more knowledgeable in N4 lore before I do something I regret.
Any other tips would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
