D66 SW Prarie song custom project guitar
« on: April 29, 2018, 04:15:47 PM »
Hey all, new to the Washburn world.

I found this 1979 d66 Prairie Song Custom at a pawn shop.
It's  a serious project guitar.
Bridge is pulling up
Flat top is warped at the bridge
Needs new saddle
Cracking top along both sides of fingerboard

I am currently humidifying in my sailboat.

Good luck, Tekkamaki!

Restoring my D-66 by a professional, very skilled luthier was very expensive and I had big doubts, but in the end it's a wonderful guitar..

Post some pictures of the process, if you want?

The guitar ended up with a friend of a friend who is a Luthier at a local shop.  He thinks that some humility, a bridge re glue and x brace repair will stabilize the guitar.   He said he will throw in a new saddle for the price of a blank.  The work will be about $120 with new strings.

He was not concerned about the cracks.  Non structural.  I will glue them with sanding dust.

Cleating the top cracks is a much better way to repair it once you have humidified the guitar properly best to actually use a proper insert then trying to get moisture from a boat and it will also be better once he glues the bridge back down.

Got her back on Wednesday night.  The work done looks great.  The bridge repair did the trick,  he fixed a broken brace, did a top crack repair for $100.  He had a Tusq nut laying around pulled from another insturment that was a perfect fit for free.  I  will probably go to bone in the near future. The action is super low with no buzz, too low?  Time will tell. She sounds really nice.

The store employees played it earlier in the day & one said that it sounds better than any of thier  $1000 Taylors & Martins.  The seemed surprised as they are not Washburn folks.

I picked up a humidifier & some Martin SP 12'S while I was there.

My other acoustic is a Art and Lutherie AMI Cedar parlor.   The Washburn has so much more volume, bass and sustain.
