CHOPS?

Guys and Gals

I am confused.  What the heck does chops mean?

In Webster's it says:

3: EMBOUCHURE; broadly : the technical facility of a musical performer

Well, never mind broadly, or narrowly or whatever, I'm still confused.

If some of you good people would be so good as to give me YOUR definition of chops I would be really grateful.  Because I don't understand it my mind glazes over when I hear it.  You'll probably understand by now that I need help [:I].

HaHa!  I get made fun of all the time for using that word and cat.  I would totally be the guy who said That cat has some serious chops.

It refers to technical skill, usually the ability to play fast and fluidly, could be on any instrument.  If a player gets rusty or out of practice he may say Man, I need to hit the woodshed, I've lost all my chops.

Can you guys just cool-it, you'll scare the few chicks we have here away.  I'm sure you're down with that.

I think so Muddy.  There were some local youngsters who put out an ad looking for musicians, and they specifically said don't bother replying if you refer to your skills as chops.  I cracked up.

My very first teacher used to tell me That riff is square, man when I played a lame line.  So I have that old jazzbo language drilled into me.
