Title: Where do you hound-dogs live?
Post by: onewilyfool on October 08, 2007, 02:31:54 PM
Just curious. Wondering where you all come from. Just the City would work, no need for phone numbers and street addresses. If you are on the lam from law enforcment, please ignore this posting. I hail from the San Francisco Bay Area, a little town called Redwood City. It's claim to fame written on a big sign on the main drag, Best weather by Government Tests Local University, Stanford (just beat #1 SC in football this weekend) Best Guitar Store in area.....Gryphon Stringed Instruments, purveyor of very fine instruments. It will be interesting to see how far and wide this forum spreads.....Thanks

I'm from about 30 miles SW of Houston, TX (Rosenberg).  We have probably the worst weather by government tests--the air is so toxic down here that allergists cannot keep up with all the respiratory diseases/conditions.  Our sports teams seldom beat anyone at anything (and if they do, it's a mistake).  Best guitar store in the area--I wouldn't know, but I sure wouldn't recommend Rockin' Robin Guitars.  They had my Dot for 3 months for a job that they said would take only a couple of weeks.  We do have some shops that sell fine instruments (Gibson, Seagull, Martin, Washburn, etc.), but from now on when I need a repair I'll contact one of the local independent luthiers.

As for being on the lam from law enforcement, not that I know of, but anything is possible, I guess [:I] (especially considering my checkered past, but I thought I had satisfied all those damn requirements, honest, officer, I did!!).

WOW, way to go Stanford, I've been waiting for someone to come along and knock USC off of their throne!  Now I just hope it sends them into a tailspin, it's Oregon's turn!  Course the Ducks kinda' stink up the field too and I'm always disappointed, they start the season off great then they blow it!

I was born in the redwoods, Crescent City, CA.   I love northern California, but I've been in Oregon most of my life.  I live in a town called Nehalem, it's an Indian word meaning: The Place Where The People Live!

I lived in St. Johns, Newfoundland for 2 years as a young child, age 2 to 4--my dad was in the Air Force up there, helping establish NORAD.  All I remember was the incredible cold in the winter.  Oh, yea--all the houses in St. Johns had doors on the second floor.  No porch, no stairs, just a door.  I couldn't figure out why, didn't ask till about 10 years ago, when my mom told me it was so people could get out of the house in the winter when the snow storms hit.  Seems the snow gets so deep people can't get out of the doors on the ground floor.  Blueberries grew wild along almost all of the roads.  During the winter the locals made a road across the entrance to St. Johns Bay--it cut about 40 miles off the trip between points at the entrance of the bay by eliminating the need to drive all the way around the bay.

Guess I remember more than I realized.  It was absolutely beautiful in the spring and summer!!

Don't ask what I ate for lunch, though.  Alzheimers might be setting in [:0] ????

Born, raised, married, work and have spent my entire 51 years in Philly with the occasional vacation in other locales.  Spent 4 years at Temple U gettin' my degree.  Weather-wise we have it better than most other places in that we have 4 seasons, not too much with temperature extremes and while we have our share of bad weather, we usually miss out on direct hits from hurricanes, tornados, hail, etc.  The ocean and NYC are both 1.5 hours away.  If you drive 1 hour south or west of Philly, you are entering the Twilight Zone and the marked difference between these areas and Philly is nite and day.  In that it turns into the Southern Bible Belt (attitudes, drawl, NASCAR, ETC).  Sometimes I swear we are only 10 miles north of the Carolinas.  ahhahhaha

Live in beautiful downtown Wiggins, MS - 30 miles north of Gulfport/Biloxi, 90 miles east of New Orleans, 60 miles West of Mobile.  Great place to live - small town where people know you, your family and some of your business!
Example, I was playing golf with a friend one day.  Another young man was playing in the group.  My friend asked me who the young fellow was.  I told him the guy's name.  He told me, and I quote, I know his name, I want to know who he is!

Nacogdoches (born and reared[:0]), the oldest town in Texas, was named for the Caddo Indians that lived in the area.

One quick story:
In 1912, the Marx Brothers came to town to perform their singing act at the old Opera House. Their performance was interrupted by a man who came inside shouting, Runaway mule! Most of the audience left the building, apparently thinking a runaway mule would provide better entertainment. When they filed back in, Julius (later known as Groucho) began insulting them, saying Nacogdoches is full of roaches! and The jackass is the flower of Tex-ass! Instead of becoming angry, audience members laughed. Soon afterward, Julius and his brothers decided to try their hand at comedy instead of singing, at which they had barely managed to scrape together a living.

Hey Wily,,

Also from California.  Born down in El Centro and then on to Los Angeles and San Diego.  Spent the young man years in San Francisco and attened San Mateo J C, to keep out of the draft.

They finally caught up to me and I went to Heidelberg, Germany.  Total luck on my part.

Left Germany to spend time with a lady from Florida.  Eventually made it back to Oregon, where my folks had moved from California.

Back to Florida for a while and then out to Nevada and then back to Osprey, Florida.

I cannot wait for the next jump,,,,

The map is very cool[8D], should of done this a long time ago.

There's a large concentration of dots on the eastern US. It looks like Tennessee would be a central location (for the majority) for a future gathering, maybe Nashville or Memphis.

Just an observation, I'm not trying to start a heated[}:)] thread. I'm perfectly happy with Pearl, TX.[:)]

I lived on I80 until the winters got too cold for my age.  (I guess they were always cold, I just got too old.)  Moved to I20 and I10 for awhile, but that ran out.  Have been hanging out on I35 and I65 but I get nose bleeds going too far north.  My most reliable address it the tag number on my front bumper.

With no offence to anyone, I won't go north of I40 if it's also east of I75.

If I ever get a flat steer tire, I hope it's across the street from Lunaray---I love Oregon.  I love Wisconsin---so long as everything isn't white----sky, ground, roads....  You know there really are four seasons in Wisconsin and Minnesota---June, July, August and Winter.

My heart got stuck in Texas and I hope my boots wear out in FT. Davis.

One wild Ndn checkin’ in here. I was born (but never reared… one way street you know!) in Tucson AZ, moved to Indiana at the ripe old age of 4, and have been living here most of the time since! I have been all over this country, but Southern Ind is where I hang my hat, so I guess that makes me a Hoosier….I know (What’s a Hoosier?) Heck if I know!

One great connection I have with Pappy, CB, Shinner, and all the other Texans here is that I am, and always will be, a Bobby Knight fan! He got screwed at IU, and they haven’t found any one yet to replace him. (never will I recon!)

Born in Westport, Connecticut, grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (yuck...) went to school in North Adams, Massachussetts, lived for a while in Annapolis, Maryland (met my lovely ex-wife there), moved to DC while she was in law school, and moved here to Chicago when she got a job with the EPA. Thought about leaving when we split up, but this town is so great that I figured I'd stay. I used to complain about the winters, but seeing as it is currently 70 degrees on October 19th I might have to find something else to complain about. Oh yeah, the public transit system is going broke and I'm having to leave earlier for work...but boy is the music scene great here!

Chicago,  I'll actually be in Chicago for a few days later this month - business trip with limited downtime.  But if I can break away to ONE good blues club, which one would you suggest.  Looking more for the real thing, my guess is not the HOB, but I could be wrong.  Thanks!

Dave hope you have a successful trip to Chicago. I'd steer you either to Buddy Guy's or Kingston Mines...there are rumours that Buddy is moving the club so check the web. His place is on the near South Side. Kingston Mines is on the North Side in Lincoln Park. I prefer Kingston Mines. Mix of local and national acts depending on the night of the week. Have fun!

Wow buckethead... you are a lucky man to live that near of the Washburn factory. You should get an visite tour and tell us about it, your impression and give a hello from us to everyone there.

The nearest guitar factory from me is Godin...

Born in Denmark, grew up in Massachusetts (did a year of HS in Williamstown, MA - right next to No. Adams). Spent some time in Los Angeles and a few other little stints here and there, 10 years in Denver and now reside in Salt Lake. Which, is actually a very cool city. No, I have not been converted[:p] Cool map, thanks Simon!

I am just a nobody from NJ. Moved to Boston, Chicago, and back to NJ. You can't call NJ's weather important until global warming takes over. I hope not. But my claim to fame is that I got my brother's early Epiphone and a tape recorder and sung a song in 1969--but I can't seem to find the presence of mind to reproduce any more like it, although there are other things, and I can't stand those Epiphones today, just pretty awful, sorry. And I'm sorry I lost that guitar, but Washburn's are better anyway. Oh yeah, I am also an honest ingin sort of new Washburn dealer (www.gapplegate.com) that has Washburn and Parker stock and I am not about to take you to town on it. I believe in the whole deal, music as our expression in life. No kidding. Hey, send me your music and I'll talk about it on my daily blog.

Hey thanks Yan. I really just want to give out some honest guitars at an honest price. If I didn't I could invest in OIL. Or sell the new robot guitar! That's some big BS. Now that's something I'll never do. You have to sleep at night, and music is the way to get you to sleep with a clear concience. Kind of life's lullaby.

I live in Morganton, N.C. in the foothills of Appalachia. (We only marry third cousins in the foothills) About 30 miles south of Boone, N.C. which nobody knew where it was until Appalachian State University beat no. 5 Michigan in football this year. Have lived all over the state including Kitty Hawk (Outer Banks where the Wright Bro's flew) which is as far East as you can go without getting wet. Very interesting about all of the Aussies and Canadians on this site but we're not very worldly down here in the sticks. I guess we all love these Washburns.

God's Country if you ask me!  I lived in Bozeman, which is in the shadow of the Rockies, and Have visited many other beautiful places, but Metigoshe is so dang peaceful!  slow pace, not overrun with people driving Hummers and huggin trees.  very down to earth, honest people up there and the lake is so clean.  I'm thinking of moving to Minot to be closer.

I live in Cary, North Carolina just west of Raleigh, the state capital.  Born in Portsmouth, Virginia and later attended graduate school in South Carolina, then worked in Maryland and New York before returning to my native South.

I am now in my mid-50s, but finally overcame the uncertainty and began learning to play acoustic guitar at age 51-52 (afterall, before the electrification of guitars, all guitars were acoustic).  As a result, I have gained an appreciation for music that I grew up with, but never developed much interest in.  Even my teenage kids know that music better than I do.  Anyway, I guess you could say I am trying to make up for lost time.

Ed

I was born in Kentuckiana, a few miles north of the Ohio River. When we were kids and went to camp in central Indiana, the kids were merciless about our southern drawl. Lived in KY, 3 years for college, Atlanta for 3 yrs., East TN. mts. for 6 years and have been here in central Ohio for 17! Yikes that makes me feel old! I miss the mountains! Think it's in my blood. I heard our area of Indiana was settled by southerners who came up the Ohio River. I believe it! Guitars never sounded sweeter than the old guys sitting on the back of pickup trucks down there. Atmosphere you could reach out and touch!

Welcome to the Forum Deb.  I know what you mean about the mountains, I've lived in the Pacific Northwest all of my life, but I have been back east a couple of times (Texas & Florida) and I could never live there; is there such a thing as claustraphobia for flat places?  I don't know, but it sure felt weird with no trees and miles & miles of straight horizons, I was sure glad to get home.

I totally understand the Flat land phobia ...got it myself.

I am in the Foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mtns near Auburn. Sorta between Sacramento Calif and Lake Tahoe. Been up in the forest for 18 years now and could never go back to the flat suburban neighborhood.

I too am just starting up playing after being stupid and stuffing my guitar in the closet for over 15 years. If only I had kept playing I could have been a monster picker by now.  Oh well ...older and wiser??? well, maybe one out of two for me.

Here is the homestead .....in the process of adding a small music room and expanded kitchen. Framing is up and roofing will be next!!

Oak Park, Il. More neighborhood than suburb - of Chicago. (I can see the Sears Tower from here). Like many of you, picked up the guitar a couple years ago....now 41.
We in Chicago are blessed with the Old Town School of Folk music...aptly named at it's founding during the folkie craze 50 years ago, now a veritable smorgasbord of all things musical and artistic. Makes it easy  to find players of all stripes to play with and listen to and learn from. This week alone I played with a Wilco ensemble and later in a Django Jam. Seeing 3 shows this coming week. Really blessed.

Came here by way of Ann Arbor, North Eastern Mass, Seacoast NH, a stint in LA, and Chicago for the last 18 yrs. Miss the mountains more than words can express.

Heritage wise, I'm a French Canadian from Riviere Ouelle...millenium will know the spot.

Cheers to all.

About 4 years ago we had an Oak fall in a snow storm and on it's way down it pulled a 80 foot tall Doug Fir down with it. My Wife and I had just gotten into bed and the whole thing came down about twenty feet from our bedroom. We heard the CRACK!! and grabbed on to each other and thought it was the end for us.

Big clean up but ended up with fire wood for 2 years :)

We have had a tree guy come and look at that tree cause it scares me, but he said a Ponderosa Pine tree like that is not coming down. I suggested he take it down anyways and he said no......we really don't need to. The guy knows his stuff so the tree gets to live.

I guess where we live I would rather take the chance of a tree coming down vs. a drive by or car jacking or some of the other risks of living in The Big City

Hi everyone - I am an oldy but still like cool music and guitars - Just joined you - I live in Essex in the UK 25 mile from London - Essex is the  Home of the essex birds (ladies)( known for wearing their white high heels) I tend to agree with Sad fingers - the uK is played out becuase of the freedon to come and live in our small pimple of a country - the weather is poor as xxxx and we are lucky to have two weeks a year of summer and thats the truth, hence I travel as often as I can for some warmth and cheer..Of to the good old USA end of August for my son's wedding in Albany NYC He lives in NYC and his lady comes from Albany, not far from the mall area.
Plan and hope to pick up a shapley piece of wood ie a Guild D55 maybe or a nice Gibson,I am looking for a nice big sounding dreadnaught or similar & easy strum for my poor playing with great action to add to the lovely D60 I have had for around 18 years? I think..any thoughts ?  its such good value in the states,I might go for second hand though to avoid reduce the duty?
regards Johno

Hello everyone, Just landed in this forum and find it very interesting and informative. I am like my username implies a VT hillbilly! Done some traveling around but ended up settling down a grand total of 9 miles from where I was born. Little village named  North Concord,VT. (pop.300 or so) Spend any extra time I have playin' bluegrass, country, and some blues up here with some very talented musician friends. I split my time between my two loves. A 1990 Washburn D24 Limited (#158 of 1000) bought it new, and a 1973 Martin D28 I picked up last fall.

Hello Gregg!  It's good to hear of a local in the forum!  I'm about an hour from Louisville.  I live in Madison, IN...Regatta hydroplane country.  Your ponies run on dirt, our ponies run on water...however, they both run in circles. LOL!  Though, I've never been to the derby, I have been to the Thunder Over Louisville a couple of times.  Incredible event!  Definitely the best firework show!!

It's become so b/c of the worldwideweb, or www.

At nearly 60 years of age, as I reflect on my long life I sincerely believe that the internet is absolutely the most wonderful invention in my lifetime!  Thank goodness Al Gore invented it!  He deserves a Nobel prize (oh, hold on, didn't they do that already?)!!

This small world is a much better place for it and this forum is one of my favorite places in that small world!

It's taken me a couple of days to finish but I've read all the way through also. The Washburn Forum IQ thread and the Dreadman thread were so entertaining that I just started jumping around using the search feature. Like what usually happens to me when I visit You Tube.... I just can't stop, one thing leads to another and another and another, ad nausium.

But yes isn't the web great.

Hello nicovt and welcome to the forum!

It's good to see someone from South Africa on this forum.  I just came back from a missions trip to Botswana and South Africa a month ago!  We had an amazing time there and met a lot of wonderful people that I will never forget.  I miss being there and all the people we built relationships with.  How long have you lived in South Africa?

I live on the west side of an east Tennessee town we call Knoxville...we call it that because the map says so I think.  I was born in Memphis, have walked with my feet ON Beale (that 10 feet off of Beale trick it too much for me I guess...never was too good at basketball or the high jump...).  I've lived here in Knoxville for basically all my life, and I've visited about 46 of the 57 United States.

My Guitar family:
Checkmate unknown model (had a stick on label on headstock, came from K-mart...borrowed from a 'friend')
.....Checkmate accessory - Vicegrip needed to use as capo
1977 Ovation Custom Balladeer, Sunburst (stolen about 2 years ago)
2006 Kona KS2NE, Natural
200? Washburn Rover RO10, Natural

EDIT: Hound-Dogs...saw that in the title to this thread.  We have a store here in Knoxville called Hound-Dogs.  Its a fan store for University of Tennessee Volunteers.  If you want something 'ORANGE' it is THE place to go! I don't know if they have any orange guitars...I'll check next time.

OK, so 'rockbeast' doesn't have anything to do with my playing ability...a friend gave it to me when we were rock climbing.  I kinda liked it so...here it is!

I was born & raised & still live in what was once a little town...Franklin, Tennessee...just about 18 miles south of Nashville.

My house sits right in the middle of the old Civil War battlefield. And on some lonely nights, I could almost swear I hear old Confederate General John Bell Hood cussing outside on the turnpike where he sent so many brave southern boys to their early graves.

Come and visit us sometime!

So the new kid on the block needs to add his two bits to the mixture...I live in the tiny hamlet of Albion, CA in Mendocino County, third county south of the CA/OR border. We're a really interesting collection of coastal communities where each of us individually has to deal with the heavy fog (in summer) and the rain (in winter).

But kidding aside, it's an eclectic collection of humanity, one I've not seen since my time in Austin and Nashville. I'm blown away by the quality of folk- and bluegrass-based instruments up here...I have my choice of luthiers and teachers if I want.

I grew up in SoCal, being born in Hollywood of all places. So living here among the gigantic redwood trees and the hippies, most days it seems that all is well with the universe.

So glad to meet fellow Washburn fans...bought my EA20B 20 years ago, and while I've played other instruments, I'll still come home to Washburn. [:D]

Well, Im in this hole called Dayton, OH. LOL Its not that bad though. I make it out worse than it is. LOL
I grew up in a Farm town for must of my life then to my dads in the burbs or Mason,OH.

I miss the 18 acres behind the house we had to shoot, hunt, ride dirt bike, hit golf balls and what not into without a care in the world. I also miss our pond.....sniff, sniff.

Started out on a Dean Solid, onto Yamaha, onto Army....LOL, onto an Aria(old aria), onto a Greg Bennett D-8, took home a Washburn from our local shop to try out. Thought it would be out of my price range cause it had no price. Went back and ask the owner to give me a break if he could cause of 4 violins,1 set of drums, and lessons my kids take from his shop. He gave me a price that I couldnt belive and I took it without blinking an eye. So now I have a wd18sw. Yeap, and I just rambled.

Sorry, so yeah. I'm here in Dayton, OH. :)

My zip code is for thriving metropolis (map dot) of Hockley, Texas but live about 10 miles from there on wooded acreage.  Grew up on the SE side of Houston, and kinda just jumped out as far NW of H-town as I could bear to drive in every day for work.
Started playing in '95 after my first big-D (and don't mean Dallas), never took a lesson but had a VHS tape to get me started. Can't say I've improved that much over the years, lol, but really enjoy playing. Picking up a guitar every day or so is part of my 'sanity maintenance program'.

San Francisco here.  Wily, I didn't realize you were so close!  I'm happy to hear that there's a nice guitar shop in the Bay area.  I've been shopping around for acoustics, and it's been challenging.  I'm not very happy with the selection I've seen at Guitar Center.  Haight-Ashbury Music Center is pretty good in terms of their selection, but they can't have everything.  I will have to give Gryphon a try.  Do they carry Washburn?

I was born in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Currently living in Penampang, 12 kms to the west of Kota Kinabalu. This is about 100 kms away from Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South East Asia. I own a few guitars, all acoustics. The latest one is a Washburn D10SCEDL. Been playing guitar since I was 13. Still learning to become a better player. Playing mostly to accompany my singing, I used to sing for a few bands when I was younger. Have recorded a few songs in the local radio and television.

Was born in Northern California, and grew up there. Joined the USAF in 2003 and have moved around ever since then, and currently living in England. I started playing guitar when I was 16, after my grandfather purchased my first guitar from a flea market. It was an off brand small scale classical guitar.

Anyway, here is my current equipment

Abilene Steel String Acoustic (No Model number on the guitar, can't find any info online, but it seems to be solid mohogany all the war around with a rosewood fnigerboard)  - Just got rid of this one as well before move
D10S (Recently gave to a friend)
D6S  (Just purchased, have yet to recieve)
Epiphone Flying V - '58 Korina
Epiphone Les Paul Studio

Guitars I want to get -

Born, raised and still live (for all of my 44 years as of next Friday) in Kansas City, MO.  The best music store in this area, for my money, is a place called The Guitar Syndicate, which nicely enough just moved to a location 2 blocks from my house.  If I'm on the lam, the cop that gave me a speeding ticket a few weeks ago missed that information.

On and off newbie player for about 20 years.

Cowtown ....Hell's Half Acre ....Ft.Worth .... Home of the infamous Panther Hall Ballroom.
Farm in Rio Vista, Tx where Phillip Nolan captured wild mustangs for and was slain by  the Spanish calvary circa 1800.

Deep love of western swing and bluegrass.  Raised on a cotton patch where a 'Texas Playboy' and truly noble gent  called home.  This upbringing which included a country dj father in a time when Willie wore a flattop instilled a life long association with stringed instruments.

When we moved to town in the early 60's he leased the nightclub in the hotel where most of the acts booked to play Panther Hall stayed.  I operated  the honky tonk after my father many years later.  So... from the Ink Spots to James Taylor i've been fortunate to witness some stuff up close.  Unfortunately I wasn't blessed with talent but lucky to have been in the presence of some.

Played in local Metalcore band I-Awake about 10 years ago, before that a bunch of skatepunk/pop-punk bands, currently play in a 70s, 80s Punk Rock Party band called REO s**twagon. I also do acoustic projects on the side that are more of the atmospheric acoustic type.

Interesting note; Used to operate a record label with distro to over 100 countries.

I grew up in Green Bay and Oshkosh.  We used to come up there and pick cherries.  If a person has never seen a Cherrie orchard, they should put it on there bucket list. I think I ate as many as I picked.  LOL,,  Peach and Apple orchards are nice, but there is nothing like a Cherrie orchard in bloom.    Tom.  :)

Hello! My name is Nikolay, and i'm from Moscow, Russia. Washburn D20-12, which I bougth few weeks ago on ebay, will be my first Washburn instrument and it is really cool guitar!

I play stringed instruments mostly (guitars, bass, mountain dulcimer, mandolin, clawhammer banjo, irish bouzouki, bowed psaltery, ukulele), and I love different types of good music - country, blues, jazz, folk, surf, rockabilly and all that oldtime stuff.

Sorry for bad english - I have very little practice in this.

Newfoundland - Upper Gullies and Eastport, to be exact. Mid-Atlantic, really, closer to London England than London Ontario...

Just got a J12sn, my first Washburn - still experimenting with strings to get the sound I want, but the neck is far and away  the best amongst my four acoustics. Bought it primarily as a beater guitar for parties, camping trips, summer at the cabin. More than pleased with it so far.,..

Hi Folks

I was born in southern England but moved to the south of France a few years ago.

A few weeks ago, I was talking to my wife about the various guitars that I've owned during the 40 years that I've been playing. One that held a lot of affection was a Washburn acoustic with a birds-eye maple back and sides, the Washburn EA40. I'd bought the guitar new around 1990.

A few days later, while browsing the internet I found my old guitar for sale...!! I knew it was mine as I'd fitted a tortoiseshell pick guard and the current owner lived just a couple of miles from where I used to live.

A deal was done and after 25 years, it's come home.

I now play in a four piece 50's and 60's rock & roll band, and for smaller venues my lead guitarist and I play the same songs as an 'unplugged' duo. The Washburn will be used for the duo work.

Thanks for listening....

Graham

First post checking in from Highlands Ranch, CO.  WD7SCE on its way as we speak.  I needed an acoustic-electric to play in church and after trying out comparable guitars in the price range, I really liked the deep sound and playability of the Washburn.  In addition to praise and worship music, I play a little of everything, strumming and finger-picking, from bluegrass and country to classic rock.  The Washburn seemed to handle that range better than other guitars.  Actually this isn't my first Washburn; I picked up a old Washburn 12-string for $10 at a garage sale a number of years ago, but it had a crack near the neck and couldn't handle the stress.  I probably should focus on playing one instrument really well instead of being mediocre at three, but I also play a fair amount of mandolin and bass.  The guitar was my first love though.  I'll report back once I put some time in on the WD7SCE.
