N Series (Nuno Bettencourt) / N4 Volume knob question..
« on: December 20, 2010, 10:04:32 AM »
yeah, the taper of the stock N4 pots is not that great.  Id personally recommend a CTS 500k pot, but some ppl do not like how stiff the rotation of the cts pots feel.

your buzzing is a grounding problem, if you can do some simple witing it shud be easy to trace it back and fix it.  the first obvious thing to check is that there is a wire connected to the claw of the tremolo, and that all the ground wires are connected to each other.

N Series (Nuno Bettencourt) / N4 - N2 Fingerboard

nope, N2's have rosewood boards. Rosewood is quite  aloose term for lots of species of wood, as is ebony.  You will get very big variations from piece to piece.  I would suspect that even the ebony boards on N4's are stained to get rid of some of the streaks found in good ebony.  blacker than black ebony is getting very rare.

N Series (Nuno Bettencourt) / N4 fretboard thickness

after radiusing, final sanding etc, they usually end up at 1/4 thick in the centre.  Dont go too thick with your fretboard though as it will leave you less wood behind the trussrod, unless you want a chunky feeling neck.   I would start out with a 7mm thick fretboard blank, as long as its perfectly flat and surface planed.

Cool David.

you might find this site useful too if you are doing some home repairs and what not....very friendly blokes there and lots of useful info on doing builds at home.

If you want budget pickups then try Irongears -   they are fantastic value and Ive got a set of 'rolling mill' HB's in my DIY padauk N4.  Ive also heard good things about Tonerider pickups and also cats whisker pickups.

For all other cheap hardware, I use CH guitars on ebay or axesrus.  excellent prices and delivery times for basic parts.

If you are able to build a neck using a 'core' from Funky Munky, you will save a big wedge and any fitment issues can be sorted out yourself.

This thread may help give you an idea of the work involved using a neck and body straight off the cnc machine from washburns firewood pile [;)]...

Hi David.

Ive put a few together using old stock parts.  Funky Munky have the best selection of parts, so my advice would be get both from them and ask them to check the compatibility before they send them to you.

It really is not a case of screwing all the bits together. Some go together easily, some require a fair bit of work.  Have you ever taken a guitar to bits and put it all back together again?  If not, I suggest you do that first and see how you get on.

Also, the old stock washburn parts come in different stages of completion.  Some necks are finished/fretted and ready for a lock nut and tuners.  Others need a truss rod/fretboard etc. Obviously you will pay more for a finished neck.  If you are serious I would put a list together for ALL the parts you will need to finish the guitar and add up the cost.  It may work out to be more than you think.  Having said that, it is a great opportunity to get a very nice custom guitar for the cots of parts alone.  Plus you can spread out the cost as you buy parts.

If you do start building your own N4, post a thread about it here and there will be a few ppl who will watch eagerly (me for one!) and be happy to answer any questions you have or give tips where we can.

N Series (Nuno Bettencourt) / L2 Nut Shim
« on: November 25, 2010, 03:13:10 AM »

get some veneers off ebay that match your fretboard wood (B.E maple or ebony probably?)  then cut your self some shims and raise the nut to give a good setup.  TBH, Id rather a nut shelf be cut too low than too high.  If you ever have the frets dressed you simply remove a shim.

Hodders, have you contacted FM about the problems with your neck?  Maybe some pictures of the neck/body would help too.

I would start over with your wiring.   First off, connect the L500 directly to the output socket and try it then.  If youre still having these problems it is 99% likely to be a problem with the pickup.

If it works as it should, then keep adding components back into the circuit until you find the culprit.  You may actually find that you eliminate the porblem by rewiring everything.

N Series (Nuno Bettencourt) / Quick question...
« on: November 11, 2010, 08:51:10 AM »
relic/vintage bodies are finished with a gel as nick has stated.   Other natural matte N4's are tung oil on the bodies.  The necks/FB's are the lemon oil/beeswax combo finish.

N2's and I would imagine the new N24 imports are a thin satin poly finish to neck and body.

I think the L500 is direct mounted in the relic?  so I would guess the cavity is not routed as deep.

When you follow the coil tap diagrams, just dont connect up the 2 intermediate wires shown from the 59' and it will work as you want it to.

Yeah I may be interested in that. PM me and let me know what spares you have and what you might want.  Ive got a few bits kicking around at the minute, not done any building for a while now.  I need to kick myself in the bum and make the effort.

I dont have any Bodies anymore mate, hopefully someone else may be willing to trade with you. If it were me, I would glue some veneer into the base of the neck pocket as suggested.  That would make up the difference in height and if you laminate some maple/cocobolo veneers it will tie-in nicely with the neck [;)]  It wouldnt be a structural issue.  The neck screws will clamp it all together and if it's glued in place it will be very strong.

It wont look perfect, but other than selling on the body and buying another I dont know what other options you will have.
