Title: Any B10 owners out there?
Post by: marc_zande on April 15, 2007, 06:15:44 AM
I have just finished replying to another member about the B10 and I got to thinking, are there many of you out there who own the B10 series Washburn bass?

I have owned mine since about 1988 and I love this bass... wouldn't swap it for anything! I'm not gigging any more (well, not for a while anyway) but still play my B10 (and the crappy Aria Pro II guitar I recently bought) to do some home recording with my Mac.

I am also searching for a Washburn guitar from the same era... or a cheap Fender Jaguar [:D]

So, B10 owners, 'fess up now!

For what it's worth, here's my (rather grubby) B10...

Hello marc_zande,
just found your entry on the B10. I'm sorry I don't own one yet but I was just offered a 1990-produced Force ABT B10. I wonder if you could help with the specs, please? All I know of so far is that is has Washburn hardware and passive SingleCoil PU's also by Washburn. What I'm uncertain about is the body wood, the potentiometers, what ABT stands for (since there where also these legendary 'Bubinga Force ABT' basses by Washburn just around the early 1990s??) and a general idea of the sound. Could you explain on those, please? As for the potentiometers: I've heard that the bass was switchable between active and passive mode, that'S all I know. Thank you ever so much!

Damn it! I am so sorry that I missed this reply from crimhead!

1) No idea at all about the timber used. I'm guessing basswood. They were a budget bass (from what I can figure). Mind you, it is a very light bass and yet has great sustain.

2) I have no idea about the pots either and am amazed (and very happy) that mine are still ok.

3) ABT = Active Bass Technology.

The sound?... I LOVE IT! I use Dean Markley Blue Steels 45 ~ 100 and it has awesome punch and ear-splitting brightness when you want it.

Yes, the Tone pot doubles as the active/passoive switch. Push in to engage, pull out to switch off.

nrich... good to see another one surface ;)

I've got a B-10 too and I've used it for gigging over the last fifteen or so years. It's still a reliable workhorse and I think it's every bit as punchy as many of the modern basses. I bought it second hand and the serial number is 8001830, which, if I'm correct, means that it was made in 1980!

Never too late to the party... nearly three years later and my B10 is still my favourite. Since these posts, I have purchased a couple of basses, one being a Greg Bennet and the other a very sad Yamaha RBX200 like the one I used as the backup to the Washburn when I used to gig. It was stolen form a gig in 1992 and never recovered. The one I picked up on eBay was stuffed but for $40AU, it seemed a good first restoration project. I'm pretty happy with the outcome: http://dairally.net/gear/rbx_restoration/

And I did get that Fender Jaguar by the way ;)

Long live the B10!

Hey, just come across this forum while trying to find out about my B10 - sounds like it must be a 1984 model as the seriel number ends in 4. Just about completed rewiring it, and getting it ready to play after a long break - previous potentiometers were shot. Good to know there are other B10s out there.

Another B-10 bass arrives at the party: S/N 9030261. They were using the last digit of year is first digit of S/N convention around that time, so the leading 9 makes it a 1989. Those of you who have a leading 8 have 1988 models.

Mine has a black body with the same switch and pot configuration as others have described. The neck is natural. Country of origin is not stamped anywhere. It says CHICAGO SERIES in pretty small print after the Washburn logo.

FWIW, here's a guy playing what looks like the same bass but with a natural body: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4V5jfdpwkg

I'll post more when/if I find out more. Cheers! ~Brian

PS: I have confirmed by exchanging email with the author that the bass on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4V5jfdpwkg is an ABT force B10. He cannot emphasize how good this bass is, neck is superslim and active part really powerful, sustains forever. He sure does play it well!

OK, here is some more info:

The B-10 is on the 1988 pricelist in four colors (B=Black, WH=White, R=Red and CBL=Cobalt Blue) for $429.00.

On the 1989 pricelist, it is there again, but only in one color (TS=Tobacco Sunburst) for $449.90.

The 1988 and 1989 pricelists had left-handed B-10-LH models for $499.00 and $539.90, respectively.

In the 1990 pricelist, the B-10s no longer appear, but they started specifying the woods in the pricelist, and basses in the B-10 price range had alder bodies, maple necks and rosewood fingerboards.

Here is a page with links to the above pricelists: http://www.washburn.com/about-us/customer-service/washburn-guitar-archives.html

On that page, be sure to read the double-asterisk footnote about the serial numbers, since it applies to the B-10s.

Finally, here is a 1984 pricelist page: http://www.matsumoku.org/models/washburn/catalogs/84_pl/84_pl_pg3_web.jpg.html

and a 1985 catalog page: http://www.matsumoku.org/models/washburn/catalogs/1985/pg4.html

In these, the B-10s do not yet appear. ~Brian

I have a black B-10 and have gigged with it for years, having bought it second hand in the early 90s.  It's had some repairs over the years as you'd expect.   Th fretboard was glued back down, the frets re-done etc etc, but I have 3 flaws now that means I may have to consider a new neck.

There is a crack in the headstock, and the truss rod has finally seized, and the nut at the top of the neck has broken away where the G-String applies pressure (my bass has the black pointy headstock).

The bass however is awesome.   The sound has to date been unmatched for me.   I have had several basses over the years, but they were always consigned to 'spares' as nothing has delivered a sound that matches the ABT sound.

Anyone know if and where I can get a replacement neck ?

Andy, you might try these guys:  http://www.warmoth.com  They carry a wide variety of guitar and bass bodies and necks.  And they will ship internationally.

hi,  i think i just got myself a B30... at least i think it is... S/N K863424...  P and J pups.... metallic red color.

I wrote Washburn to verify or validate my educated guess and this is the reply...

"Ric: Here are some specs. Sometimes not everything was exact:

- offset double cutaway ash body, figured top, bolt-on maple neck,
24-fretless rosewood fingerboard with dot inlay, black pointy headstock
with four-on-one-side tuners, standard bridge, low impedance active pickup
in the bridge, Washburn Cruise Control active electronics, three knobs,
black hardware, available in various finishes, mfg. late 1980s.

They were made in Japan at the Kasuga factory - very good quality.

Darren"

for anyone who has questions regarding their Vintage Washburn Gits...  forward email to darren@vintagewashburn.com  he is very helpful person.

Hi guys. I got a Washburn B10 black active bass last year from my friend. Im wondering can somebody tell me more about it by the looking the serial number 6100604. There is no place where is made in nor the year of manufacture. However it is a nice bass and I found it very versatile. The other thing is somebody was playing with the wires inside so I wonder where ca I find the schematic for it? Many thanks

hi kiwimusicman,

there are wiring schematics in www.vintagewashburn.com just look here http://vintagewashburn.com/Wiring%20Diagrams%20PDFs/WiringDiagrams.html under BASS > Wiring Diagram for your bass model B-10.

i have a B-30, but there was no sound coming out of amp just acratchy noise...  the owner sold bass with Washburn deluxe case (MiJ) to me  cheap...  good thing i have some knowledge in electronics, the negative (black) wire came loose and he use a cardboard to tighten the 9v battery to maintain contact.  i fixed the minor problem and now she purrs...  :)

And still this thread is alive... just. Geez, resurrected yet again and after more then five years!

Yes, I still have the B10, even though it has now been joined by an Epiphone Thunderbird (my dream bass!) but I still love the B10 and wouldn't part with it. I managed to get a replacement bridge as years of sweat and beer had taken its toll as well as a set of tuners, just in case. The electronics are still clean and noise-free, everything still works just as it should.

2012 marks 20 years since I last gigged live with this bass... but I still play it regularly.

Yes, there will always be a place in my life for my B10 ;)

Guitar wise things have gone nuts here. Making up for all those guitars I resisted over the years. There's now a 62 re-issue Jaguar, a Tokai Firebird and a sweet Yamaha acoustic on the rack, as well as that cheap Aria Strat copy.

My serial No. is 8003100 - would any wise souls be able to date it for me ? Thanks in advance.
This is really the only bass that I've owned - had it about 18 years but never really felt the need to get another!

Does anyone know if it would cost a lot to repair/replace a fret, maybe 2. Got quite a bad buzz on all strings at the second and third frets.

Thanks for reading!

hello hwobhm kid,

Welcome to Washburn forum website..  I am not an expert but I found some information on vintagewashburn.com/Bass/EarlyModels.html (information, pictures, and specs of some vintage Washburn) and in www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/official-washburn-club-part-3-a-1060572/index21.html (Talkbass forum of Washburn bass club section with very knowledgeable Washburn collectors and a bunch of good guys) you can join the club and get a number..  I'm no. 24 (I think)

---------------
I see you already joined the official Washburn in talkbass...  ask MEKer or Melonthief, they know a lot about Washburn bass...  you could email Darren - darren@vintagewashburn.com - for more information.

----------------

what color is your bass?  how does she sound?  my B-30 has PJ pickups.

Hi all !
I've had my eye on this thread for a while but never posted, so I feel like a bit of a lurker, not to mention necromancer for resurrecting this old thread. I have a B10 and I love this thing but I'm emigrating in a month or so, and there's only so much stuff I can take with me, so I need a new home for my bass where it's going to be appreciated.
It's in good condition, still sounds awesome, and I can post or email some pics on request. I've also got a 9v charger and a couple of batteries to go with it, as I'm sure any B10 owner or prospective owner will be aware of - these things eat batteries like no tomorrow.
I'm in South East UK so make me an offer.

Another B-10 owner here. My first bass, obtained sometime around 1988-1989. I really can't say enough about it. I stumbled upon this forum and thread while looking for some replacement parts for the bridge. Just a note, a shop replaced my active electronics, while the bass no longer accidentally eats batteries, it no longer has a passive mode. I'm a little ticked that I didn't ask to keep the originals. Anyway, I'm on the look out for parts, does anybody have a good source?

And me, picked up a 1987 blue B-10 as playable project a week ago.
Unfortunately I have found that all the wiring has been hacked about and one of the pickups is not standard and the preamp is missing so also on the look out for parts.
@todd a real shame you didn't get the old bits back as that would have been ideal for me to copy and make a new board for mine!
I'll let you know if I turn anything up that may help you out.
So if anyone has a failed B-10 preamp, I'm happy to pay the postage if you want to donate it?

I still have my first bass, the Washburn B-10  - Love this thing. Unfortunately, I have had some work done on it, and a tech replaced the active electronics with some kit. It's not the same, but it still plays well.  More details at a later date.

Wow, more than ten years on and the thread hasn't died yet ;)

Well, that deserves an update. I said, quite some years ago, that I didn't gig anymore. Since then, I have played a couple of shows and am actually recording this weekend... ad all with my trusty ol' B10

Since I was last on here, I have purchased a couple more basses and guitars, including the Fender Jaguar I always wanted, a Tokai Firebird (lovely guitar!) and a Gibson RD Artist. As for the basses, I purchased an Epiphone Thunderbird and then sold it on just six months later. Nowhere near as nice to play nor sound as good as my thirty year old Washburn ;)

Since I was last on here, I have also purchased a trashed Yamaha RBX200, the same as the one I had as my standby when I used to gig. That one was stolen from a show so when this one came up on eBay for about $40, I grabbed it as a project. I have refinished and rewired it and it's not a bad thing at all... but still not as good as my B10 ;)
