Any advice for installing a button strap?
« on: December 07, 2007, 01:37:10 PM »
I have a Washburn J28SCEDL Cumberland and want to add a button strap but I am not sure where to install it, I am also not sure if it will void the warranty?  If anyone has installed one on their cumberland and has any feedback, it would be greatly appreciated.

Louis...thanks, I wasn't sure because it says that any altercations void the warranty, so I wanted to play it safe....There is a spot on the back lower part of the neck that looks good but I just wanted to see if there was anyone that added a button there and if they had any issues with it cracking or anything....was trying to post a picture on here but couldn't figure it out....anyway thanks for your help......

Hey FogSmoke

Here's the most popular position from FRETS.COM.

Remember if you're going to do it yourself that you must drill a pilot hole... otherwise IT WILL CRACK.

Hope that's some help.

I too have this guitar and I did not want to marr the look of the heel so I bought a gold strap pin which matches the hardware  and with a pilot hole put in on the bottom flat side of the heel on top of the small  white triangle plastic  cover It's out of the way and holds the strap in a comfortable style plus looks good , it's really up too you where you want it but remember drill a pilot hole first and use a piece of felt inbetween the wood and the strap pin , this is one great guitar and if you read my comment previous I would recommend the Adarrio flat tops strings on it ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; keep on playing

Here is where I put mine. It takes the weight of the guitar in the proper direction so the strap won't slip off the button.

Some Guitars
9 Tweed Straps
72 gold strap buttons with screws
10 Buffalo horn picks
Multitude of various plastic picks
Broken fingernails when used for fingerpicking
Wrist wraps for those arthuritis fretting moments
Preperation H for those long sitting hours playing guitar
42 various sets of strings
Lizard Spit Guitar Polish
3 polish cloths
Pro winder/cutter
2 plastic winders
Steel and nylon string clippings (I should clean up a bit)
4 wall mount hooks
One bile slice remover tool (for Dreadman)
ton of yuks and smiley faces here
One set beatles albums on Apple label
Various Beatles and Wings 45's
Two Turtle Doves

I will definitely try those strings, I have been using John Pearse strings....they aren't too bad.  My first instinct was to add the strap button to the bottom of the heal, my main concern was the warranty but that doesn't seem to make a difference so I think I'll try that.  Thanks for all the help....oh and I do know about drilling a pilot hole, a friend of mine learned that lesson the hard way years ago....

Craig, one of our members has a home page in which the process is very well detailed.  Surf into Skip77's profile and click on the link to his homepage, you'll find his photos and instructions there.

Good luck--it's an easy mod and you're 90% there since you know about that pilot hole.

Thanks, Magic, I get many comments about the Blondie Sisters lol. The cutaway/electric is the 6 string MVP with the MOP tree of Life up the fret board, and the darker quilted maple sister (they had two different mothers lol) is the 12 string. I love them both, they compliment each other well.

I haven't installed it just yet, but I did find good information and am going with the gold strap button to match the hardware, I'm sure it will go well, I just wanted to make sure to install it in the best location, I really love this guitar and don't want to drill any more holes in it than I need to.
