Hey all,

Just wondering, what are some good strumming songs that you would suggest (that are fairly easy?) I can play stuff like Wonderwall by Oasis and Someay I'll be Saturday Night by Bon Jovi... I love Bob Dylan, that sort of stuff....[:D]

Great list Rocket.

couple of adds
Close the door lightly, Eric Anderson
King of the Road Roger Miller
For the Good Times Kris Kristofferson
Folsom Prison Blues Johnny Cash

All easy, good sing-a-longs.

Bob Dylan's You Ain't Goin Nowhere (D Em G D) That's the entire tune.

John Prine's Angel From Montgomery (G F C D7)

John Prine's Paradise (D G D A7 D) That's the entire tune.

Everybody's Long Black Veil Several keys are available on line.

Everybody else's The Weight Several keys are available on line.

The chords to these with lyrics are all available by google. Each took me less than a day to learn.

Hey Quinn,

Thanks for the John Prines - I'll be working those up. Good list Rocket - especially pleased to see easy version of Sultans of Swing. I've been wanting to do that one.

Good thread. I'll add some next week. For now, on the road to Montreal. Road trip!

Hey Junior,
great question to throw out there. To quinns suggestion of The weight, one great chord progression that is super if you're working on your barre chords.....

verse is A C#m D A (barred on 5th and 4th frets)
Chorus   A E D (barred on 5th and 7th frets)
walkdown A(5th) Gm(4th) Fm(2nd) open E open D

you can work on the most common barre shapes, with a familiar song, and hardly have to move around the neck.....

lots of great suggestions here, folks.

Check out Wheat Kings by the Tragically Hip. Basically G C with climb to D in the chorus - all open, all easy. It's a great song that can be played as simply or as prettied up as you wish. There are examples on YouTube.

If you've got a dobro playing friend, well then, you're golden!

I was noddling around today, not really playing any one thing. And this came out all by itself.  Then I googled it and learned it in about 2 minutes. It's from my childhood and as a child and after I thought it was very corny. But today I've had so much fun playing it and changing and altering it.  It's really fun and lends itself to endless on the fly interpretations.  The one I like best is when I reggae-fied it.

So long as you like to rock out . . .

While playing at a staff party on Thursday night, I followed a friend through an acoustic Keep On Rockin' in the Free World. Spent the weekend learning and working it up on my new Idol WI45.[:D][:D] MAN, that's a fun one to do if you're willing to push out the vocals! It's another great song to get the audience howling out the chorus and not at all hard to play.

Neil Young closed with this at his recent concert here. He went through about five apparent song-ending crescendos only to break back into the chorus again each time, just when it seemed he was finally done. He had the place going berserk![8D][^]

Hey Junior,

Rock it out!

The tabs on the web seem to do one of the two following things:

This:

G        D             C          C/B C/A G
Keep on rockin' in the free world,

or this:

G        D               C         C Em
Keep on rockin' in the free world

(Sorry 'bout the chord spacing in that text - can't seem to fix that but, hopefully, you get what I mean.)

I found that what works at the end of each chorus line is C, with walk down on A string 2nd fret, to an open E major.

There are places in the song where barre chords fit the chorus (i.e. first half of lead break) but, for the most part, it seems to resonate with best heaviness on open chords.

FWIW. Enjoy!
