ok, some of you have been around long enough to remember Fretless Johnny...

remember when he got all serious and studious? i want to go there.

excuses about not having time to practice are like... you know.

i am officially taking my augusta to work...

shiner and i are quitting smoking, so on my breaks, and during lunches, i'm going to practice [on the days i am actually in the office as opposed to court]

we've been jamming on acoustics tonight, which hasn't happened [before padre] in too long a time. and my fingers are sissified by playing electric... plus i have all this untutored fingertip skin to break in after cutting the nails on my right hand.

wish me luck; i'm jumping in the pool.

I can't think of what's more honest than the love of a good woman, the companionship of a loyal dog, and beautiful music to express an appreciation of it all. Sounds like the Shiner house is wisdom, manifest....

oh wait...add a cold beer to that list!!

Cheers!

That's a great looking wall! Like bars on an old soldiers uniform, you can't buy them, you only earn them over time, by taking risks. Maybe I'll get to hear the stories behind them someday.

Here's a shot of the "wall" for reference Tio. My second wife never let me have pictures of my family around, so the day she moved out I started the wall. We've added to it over the years, and now its kinda grown into "the hall". We think of it as a Shiner family history.

once upon a time, in the long, long ago, katie was a puppy. i acquired her in 92.. went to law school at baylor in spring of 93.

as a puppy, she went through two of my only pairs of shoes [i was so broke in law school i literally went 90 days when the ex was out of state working where i ate one box of macachee a day] a purse

and then, i came home one day...

[stop... when i graduated hs, my mom asked me what i wanted for a present. i worked at her interior design studio, when i wasn't working and gram and pawpaw's lumberyard (and it was the '80's) and i asked her to give me this angora throw pillow]

and my pillow was strewn over the entirety of the house.

i completely lost it.

but that dog became my soul mate, tried to intervene when the ex would come after me... she was a True Friend.

[laugh]

so there's hope for Maggs yet.

I respect the hell out of you for taking him in. Someone abandoned a beagle mix near our house a few months ago. We took her in, put up lost and found fliers, even put an add in the paper, but no one claimed her. We were considering trying to keep her until she started getting aggressive toward Maggie. We finally had to call animal control.

I felt so bad though because she had obviously been abused. She would cower whenever anyone tried to approach her. And it wasn't her fault, she was just responding with the behavior that had been beaten into her.

Oh lord Tio. She escaped the very first day we tried to keep her in the back yard. Fortunately a neighbor saw her and snagged her for us. I spent the next two weeks "beagle-proofing" the back yard to make sure it wouldn't happen again. I still have to perform a weekly "beagle" patrol to fix all the places where she has tried to dig under the fence or chew through it.

hard to summarize 103 yrs. I'll give that a bit of thought.

As for keeping Bo in the yard...
when rescue folks did their home inspection, they INSISTED we raise the fence height some way. I committed to getting that temporary plastic mesh fencing you'll see in parks and on construction sites...then the adoption went through much quicker than either side expected.

He covers the yard in lightening speed, can easily clear a 4 foot obstacle (does so in our forest excursions - fallen trees - regularly) but despite chasing rabbits through that fence daily, he's never tried to clear it. He also doesn't dart when he goes through the gates unleashed. I attribute it to being kenneled all those years...he simply respects fences, and is eager to be obedient. He cowers at the hint of anger...he clearly had the sh*t kicked out of him prior to joining our family.

Is maggie trying to escape regularly?

Very cool CB! Good luck with that. And congrats, you guys, on kickin' those nasty cigs...

Don't apologize Tio. Those are some beautiful pictures! I would love to hear your neighbor's story, and I'm wondering how you keep that monster from hopping the fence.

He rescued us.

here is my unsocialized dog getting cozy with my 103 yr old neighbor, (that's another story)

And protecting us from marauding squirrels and rabbits, ala Maggie...

Man, I've been in a talkative mood lately. Sorry guys. I'll give it a rest.

That, at least, was a good decision. I've had dogs my whole life, and he is as good a canine companion as I've ever known(that includes the Beagle I had years ago, Chloe.) So, no, in my experience, immunity to gunshot fear isn't a given.

Tio, i love her for what she is. i think it's awesome that y'all took in a rescue.

Congrats on the smoking changes, CB and Shiner, I'll be pulling for you on that front as well.

thanks, y'all...

Tio, that is awesome!

Pappy... cross-threading... the innate hunter sense of beagles doesn't include immunity to the gunshot fear, does it?

last night, we were in the backyard, and some truck passed nearby backfiring like crazy. maggs had her tail between her legs and was trying to hide behind me. i love the way she trees cats and squirrels jacking with my birds, tho.

Good luck on the quest, although the serious and studious part seems a little unsettling.

Never took up the smoking vice. But the friends I know who did, and quit, wow what a difference it made in their lives. Best wishes on that also.

You are SO RIGHT, Tio!! One suggestion, get her a footrest for her left foot, that'll elevate the neck of the guitar a bit more and make it easier for her to keep that thumb on the back of the neck. Getting the elbow directly below the neck of the guitar really opens up the palm and makes fretting those chords SO much easier, as you well know!

Looking forward to hearing how things progress for our beloved CB and for your GF, too!

CB and LMS, concrats on quitting smoking, knowing the both of you I am sure you'll put both feet in the fires and have it beat in no time and I would think the kids will be darn proud of you both for giving up that bad habit ( I know I did to ).
And last I spoke to F.J. he was doing all right for himself and had finished and was teaching, haven't spoken to him for a while but will try again soon and make sure he is still raising a little hell.
Good luck in the pool to the both of you and may your practises be as enjoyable as the other thing was.Ship

I'm wishing you luck, not on the guitar playing as you both are quiet good at that already, but rather on the decision to quit smoking, smartest move you two have ever made and if you have the same dedication toward that goal as you do playing music, the results will be success. My hat's off to both of you for taking the first step to enrich your lives further.

they were gone shortly thereafter. I was in the midst of modifying the saddle, and thought I may have to pull the strings.
Sure do appreciate the concern though!

WOO HOO CB.
Very cool! I know that feeling! Been there now for a couple months and I can't believe the progress I've made. The coolest thing has been that while practicing scales, and trying to jump around between shapes, I trip over a progression, like a root on a path, and I stop to explore it. Try it barred, then open, then a mix. Low octave, high octave. Then I throw a solo over it, same thing, try it high, then low, different blues patterns....next thing you know 2 hours has passed. Put the guitar down, TEAR myself away, 30 minutes later, I'm back, sneaking into the room to pick it up "just for a minute".

The best investment I made for practicing was a looper. Allowed me to accompany myself, made practicing SO much more interesting. But then, I didn't have my partner in the house to do it for me, like you do! But now THAT"S changed to. My girl took her first class last week, and she's in the other room now, playing "jambalaya" D, A7, D, A7.
I can't wait to follow in the Shiner's footsteps.

Here she is with "her" 1981 Washburn D60 Timber Ridge(thanks Pike!)
Dugly, you'll appreciate the "proper form"
(took it with my phone, forgive the quality.)

I'll have to get her on here, CB can mentor her and Rose!
