- Basically dude, its going to be a long strenuous process to find your sound and write music you are proud to present to the world, but just keep at it regardless of any criticism, and once you achieve what youve been looking for and youve worked for, its extremely rewarding.

Everyone knows what being on tour is like, 5 or 6 smelly sweaty dudes, in the back of the van, pissing in bottles to cut down on rest stops and not showering for days at a time. With Kristen being in the band for the past few years how does that change your guy's habits while touring?

- I play a Washburn HM series WV and a WM. both black with floyd rose, naturally. Im hopin to get a WV in snake skin one of these days...
- I chose to play Washburn because i was attracted to their super comfortable necks and body shapes. From what i previously played the sound quality is ridiculous as well.

what has influenced you guys guitar wise and as a band and why?

- From a personal standpoint, id say that Brian Wilson played a major role in influencing me as a musician, but as far as the band goes, id say that bands like Dimmu Borgir and Hatebreed play a part in the WOP sound. When we first started writing WOP songs we wanted combine the element of symphonies like Dimmu Borgir is renowned for, along with the catchiness and hardcore influence of Hatebreed.

I'm just curious how long you guys have been playing guitar and at what age did you really get serious about playing guitar?

- Well thinking back, i guess you could say i started playing guitar around 9. I come from a pretty musical family so ive always been exposed to playing and performing music, but it wasnt until around 9 where i actually started learning to play. my dad taught me 3 chords (G C D) and from there i just kind of went off and taught myself everything else. I took a few theory and harmony classes in college, that definitly helped out a lot.

Hey guys, I've been a fan ever since you guys sent me a friend request on Myspace, way back when haha.
But I have a question about tuning. I know you guys play in standard/drop D. But why? I mean most Death Metal/core bands play in dropped tunings, like C and lower, is there any reason you guys decided to go with standard/drop D?

- Whats up Anthony,
well dude, i feel that bands nowdays are only concerned with sounding heavy rather than writing music. Since the new trend is to play 7 strings and tune it as low as possible, id like to think that WOP stands out in that way being that the audience can actually hear the notes we are playing rather than a jumble of notes that just blob together.

- Nick and I both use Ernie Ball strings and in tune guitar picks (2mm). I play Ernie Ball regular slinkys (10-46)

Hey you Nicks. I've been listening A Cold Day In Hell and Decimate The Weak forever. I'd say i was one of your first european fans. I got to know you and your sounds through xAFBx's Topfriends List in myspace, so:
In The Last Three Years, there is a very obvious development, showing WoP is making it's way from a true-Sxe Band to a long-hair-Metalband. The Music has grown more compact than ever and you're touring with Bands like Dimmu Borgir (wtf??).
What do you think about this process? is it ok when Sxe Bands stop to propagate their way of life?
We already had this phenomenon with Bands like Throwdown, Bleeding Through, Maroon etc.

- Whats up man! Well basically, WOP has never been a Straight Edge band. A few of us were and still are edge since the day we started WOP. We are friends with many edge bands, and when we started we did many DIY tours with a lot of edge bands such as xAFBx, Deathstar, Recon, Son of Day, Suffocate Faster, Too Pure to Die, and a grocery list of many more. So i can see why you might think that we were in fact a "straight edge band," some of our lyrics like "bring back BROhibition" sometimes get misunderstood as PROhibition. So with that being said, i think that WOP has stuck to our roots pretty f*****g true despite all the different tours weve done, whether it be with bands like Dimmu, or Danzig, or Moonspell, Hatebreed, Chimairia, you name it. We havent changed our sound in any way to appeal to a certain audience, rather we have always had the same sound we have always had and have been trying to achieve. ...And none of us have long hair if that helps you out at all except art and krandall.

I read in Guitar World that music theory will help a person as a guitar player. I was wondering how much theory you guys know, how much you use in your song writing, and if you would recommend taking theory.

- Knowing theory absolutly makes a difference in every aspect of playing music dude. Like i said, i took a few theory and harmony classes in college that help me out when writing, and i would absolutly suggest learning some.

What set up did you guys use to record guitar on both albums? Also did you change anything for solos/leads (EQ, mic positioning, different set up?)
What kind of hand/thumb stretches do you do before playing to avoid cramping?
How has Century Media treated you guys?

- before playing i warm up my hands with meditation balls to stretch my wrist and finger muscles. ill sit down and spin them in my hand for a good 20 minutes while listening to Queen, and by that time im ready to go.
- CM has been amazing to us. They have had our back since day 1, and had faith in us when nobody else did. we are honored to be part of such a legendary label with a legendary roster of bands.

What goes through your head when your in the song writing process? also does weed sometimes spark creativity when you guys are putting riffs together?

- Well first of all, i dont smoke weed so that definitly doesnt help when putting songs together. But when we start the writing process, i generally listen to as much different music i can from as many genres as i can think of to gather inspiration from then i sit down with my guitar in my bean bag chair and start playing till i get in the zone and something good finally comes out.

As of right now I am playing a washburn into a sennheizer wireless, into my EVH 5150 III head. In my effects line i have a BOSS chromatic tuner into a BOSS noise suppressor into a BOSS super overdrive pedal, into a BOSS EQ pedal. For cabs im running 2 EVH 5150 III cabs. |
